Are you ever doing an activity or chore that was boring and wished that there was a way to make it more fun? You should listen to podcasts while you’re washing your dishes or going for a run. They’re like radio shows that can be easily downloaded to your laptop or phone so that you can carry them around and listen to them anywhere, anytime. There’s something for everyone. There are podcasts of all genres, from shows that sound like you’re listening to two friends chatting to a professional show of actors performing. They also cover all types of subjects, too, like learning English.
Lily tells Brian why she enjoys listening to podcasts so much. Find out more in today’s English lesson about online radio shows.

Lily: Hey, Brian.
Brian: Yeah.
Lily: Did you know that there was a time when Dallas was trying to become a port city even though it was 300 miles away from an actual ocean?
Brian: No. Really?
Lily: Yeah, I learned it on a podcast this morning. I listen to a lot of them all the time.
Brian: Oh, podcasts. Those are radio shows on your computer, right?
Lily: Yeah, you can get them on iTunes. Lots of them have websites. They’re really awesome. It’s such an exciting medium because there’s so much cool stuff happening. There are all these different genres. There’s something for everyone, really.
Brian: Is it pre-recorded, or do they do them live?
Lily: It depends on the show. But most of them are pre-recorded. There’s this one that I listen to all the time that’s this horror, kind of crazy one, called “Welcome to Night Vale.” And they do live shows because they are all theater people. And then you can also download them and listen to them on your phone or MP3 player.
Brian: That seems pretty convenient. I was always a little confused about how they worked.
