To do anything for the first time can be scary. Going on a first date can make you feel even more nervous because you want to make a good first impression. You’re also trying to figure out if your date will be a good match for you. At the same time, you’re wondering if they like you back.

When two people are just getting to know one another, it can be difficult to decide where to go and what to do. Hopefully, the pair on the date will have something in common and can find an activity that they will both enjoy. A classic first date is to go out to eat so they can chat and learn more about each other while enjoying a good meal.

Jessica is worried because she doesn’t know what she’ll be doing on her first date. Find out more in today’s English lesson about finding love.

Jessica:  You’re not going to believe what I’m going to do this week.

Lily:  What are you doing?

Jessica:  I am going on a first date!

Lily:  That’s so exciting.

Jessica:  No, it’s not. Oh my gosh. The anticipation is giving me butterflies.

Lily:  It’s OK. It’s so fun. You get to meet someone new. It can be awkward, that’s true. But it’s anyone’s guess what’s going to happen. And that’s kind of exciting.

Jessica:  But I’m dealing with so much indecision. I just don’t know what I’m going to wear or where we should go. And I’m feeling really self-conscious about it all.

Lily:  But you’re going to be awesome. This person wanted to go on a date with you, anyway. Feel confident in that and just put your best foot forward and you’ll be fine.

Jessica:  Thanks, Lily. I’m starting to feel better already.

Lily:  Good.

It’s normal to be nervous about going on a first date. Jessica has butterflies just from thinking about it. The anticipation of not knowing what will happen makes her nervous. What will they do? Where will they go? There are so many questions!

Lily is very excited for Jessica, and thinks that this is a great chance to meet someone new. She thinks Jessica will be awesome and will have a fun date if she has a positive attitude. A first date can lead to a second date, and it’s anyone’s guess what will happen after that.

Have you been on a first date? What did you do and how did it go?

Hi Gordafarid,    it could be low self-esteem, also thinking that you won`t be able to measure up to others expectations.

@Shoba, i also agree with @gordafarid, your comment on your first date is making me chuckle , but on second thought  your  date was very clever in asking you out to see a horror movie ,he new that the flick would give you the creeps and instintingly would try to hold his hands. :))))

My first date was doomed from “date” one, i was a very insecure boy and  the girl didn`t give me a second chance. jejejeje!!!

First Dates…hahahaha… how ridiculous!! it itself ignores love and romantic affairs!! the word “first” indicates that  you are supposed to have more than one love, so you can be waiting for better cases!! is it fair??!! I don’t think so.

Most of our marriages are arranged by our parents in our culture. So, we are not fortunate enough to go on dates.

However, if we fall in love with someone, we go out with that person to various places. I’m not sure if these meetings are similar to “dates” mentioned in the above lesson.

Anyhow, my husband and I went and watched a Tamil movie for the first time after we “fell in love”. I was quite comfortable, but my husband was a bundle of nerves. He dropped the popcorn bucket and even spilt Coke all over himself.

Now he claims that it was the (horror) movie that made him nervous, and not me.

I imagine the feeling of being nervous on the first date, and things around you start to spin and act out of ordinary!! Fortunately, I have not experienced such a thing, but, at least, I could tell from my friends’ experiences that this firs date is unforgettable and could take unexpected courses, though channeled into your long-term memories even after decades passing.

My first date was when I was 14 yo. I felt a lot anticipation on the other hand I was so self-concious. I even had to make phone call to him before dating. It gave me  butterflies. I knew it was anyone’s guess but I couldnt deal with my negative thinking for it at the time. However I miss that kind of feeling theseday:) haha

I remember I felt a looot of anticipation before the meeting. We went to McDonald’s, then we started talking while walking on the street and went to a park. Being there, I gave her a box of chocolates as a present and she was like “oh, you didn’t have to” (but she was eating them anyway haha). I have never given anything as present on first dates before. One best friend I have told me to do so and I agreed. As time went by, we became grooms, until our jobs and studies made it impossible to go on. Soo… there’s no happy ending! Ok, I went off topic, but yes, it’s kind of unconfortable first dates. It’s like I don’t feel I’m being myself, ‘cause I’m acting, just for making a good first impression.
