Mmm… there is nothing like the smell of new shoes. How often do you go shoe shopping? Do you go for the high-end brands, like Jimmy Choos, Louboutins, or Nikes? Or do you just need something to cover up your feet? For some people, shoe shopping is a hobby. For some people, it is an obsession! Other people prefer practicality. They only buy the shoes they need for their everyday life.
Did you know that the average American woman owns 27 pairs of shoes while the average American man only owns 19? Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, was famous for owning 3,000 pairs of shoes! These days, people need different types of shoes for different occasions. If you live in a rainy climate, you definitely need a pair of boots. If you live somewhere hot, you need sandals. If you like to work out, you will need athletic shoes, and if you need to go to a special event, you will need dress shoes. And of course, you have to match your shoes to your outfit!
Brian used to work in a shoe store. Listen to him and Andy talk about shoe shopping.

Brian: Andy, did you know that my last job was in a high-end shoe store?
Andy_H: No way.
Brian: Yes way.
Andy_H: Did you do a good job at being a shoe clerk?
Brian: Well, I’m not there anymore. But I did an all right job. It was moderate. I did have to learn the terms for all the different shoes. I’m used to just tennis shoes, maybe a pair of boots, and some dress shoes. But, you know, I would have to help out ladies and men that were coming in looking for high-end sandals, looking for platforms and heels, which I used to think were the same thing…
Andy_H: I have to admit, I go shoe shopping about once a year. I go for practicality, and I don’t think I’ve actually spent more than 15 minutes looking for shoes. I’m in, I’m out, and whenever I go shopping, with my sister, with my mom, with my dad, who loves shoes… I am bored to tears!
Brian: There are people who have an obsession. And I can understand that now. Once working at that store, I was able to get free shoes that were really nice, so I started my own little collection. But it didn’t last too long.
Andy_H: You know, I absolutely love getting boots, but all of the times I’ve gotten boots, they’ve been given to me. And I like that even more, because I don’t like going to the shoe store.
Brian: So someone’s doing all the hard work for you.
Andy_H: Pretty much.

Brian used to work in a shoe store. He thinks he was OK at the job, but he does not do it anymore. It was fun for him to learn the different kinds of shoes. Before he worked there, he did not know that platforms and heels were different things! He also enjoyed working at a shoe store because he got free shoes. He was able to start a collection.
Andy only buys the shoes that he needs. He does not really care about high-end brands or expensive shoes. In fact, shoe shopping makes him very bored! However, he does like it when people give him shoes. That way, he gets nice shoes without having to do the work.
Do you own a lot of shoes? What is your favorite shoe brand?
