Don't Stare in Public

Don't Stare in Public

Date: Nov 04 2004

To end Stare Week, we’ll talk about a time when it’s really not OK to stare. When you’re in public, you should not stare at people. I read somewhere that Americans have “shorter looking times” than some cultures. This means that if you look at someone for more than a split second, they might think you are staring. Check out what happened to Steph on the bus the other day.

Steph:  I was on the bus yesterday and this old woman was staring at me.

John:  Why? Were you wearing something funny?

Steph:  No. I wasn’t wearing anything funny. But she just kept on staring at me and making weird faces.

John:  I wonder why she was doing that. Maybe she had some kind of mental problem.

Steph:  Maybe. I really hate it when people stare, don’t you? I mean, doesn’t it make you feel icky?

John:  Usually I just stare right back at them. And then they stop.

Steph:  You do? That’s a total no-no. You shouldn’t stare at people in public.

John:  Well if they’re doing it to you, you do it back.

Steph:  What? That’s totally ridiculous. Like, I mean, if someone’s staring at you and they make you feel uncomfortable, then you should tell them, “hey, stop staring.”

John:  Maybe. I just like to make them feel uncomfortable back. Paybacks.

Steph:  I guess so. Paybacks are hard to take, huh?

John:  Yeah.

Steph:  Oh well. Just don’t stare at people on the bus. It’s a bad idea.

John:  I haven’t done that for a while now. I quit a while ago.

Steph:  That’s good. Give it up.

Discussion

What would you do if someone were staring at you? Would you stare back? I guess that’s what they call “fighting fire with fire.” I never like to do this because the person could really be crazy and they might get angry. Sometimes, I try to make eye contact with them to let them know that I know they are staring at me. It’s such a difficult situation!
Have a great weekend!
