As the world watched live on television, 2 students at Columbine HS in Littleton Colorado, brutally attacked their fellow-students and teachers. The film Elephant is a chilling movie which looks deeper into the lives of troubled teens like these. Winner of the Golden Palm at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, Elephant is not a cookie-cutter Hollywood movie. Gus van Saint, it’s creator uses a variety of creative cinematographic techniques to create the mood and feelings which would bring an individual to such extremes.
Dialog

Stephanie: Hey have you seen that movie Elephant?
Beth: No…I think I heard something about it…aren’t there some famous actors in it?
Stephanie: Actually, I don’t think that there are any famous actors in it, but the director is pretty famous.
Beth: Who directed it?
Stephanie: Gus Van Saint…have you heard of him?
Beth: Oh yeah, he’s awesome!
Stephanie: Yeah it won some awards. Um…it won the Palm d’Or at Cannes.
Beth: Wow…what was the film about?
Stephanie: It was kind of about high school violence…I dunno...you lived in Colorado right? Do you remember Columbine?
Beth: I do remember hearing about it. Is there some relevance between that incident and the movie?
Stephanie: Yes there is some relevance there. Actually the movie is kind of based on that story
Beth: Oh wow, I didn’t realize that.
