Of all the animated movies coming out this summer, Shrek looked to me like it would be the funniest. I’m a big fan of Mike Myers, the voice of Shrek, so I was very excited to see the movie.
I finally got a chance to see the movie last week and it lived up to all my expectations. Tanis said she was going to see it too, so I was excited to see what she thought. Let’s hear what she has to say!

Dialog

Tanis:  Okay Nedra, I have to be honest with you, I did not see Shrek last week like I promised. Did you see it?

Nedra:  Yeah. Rick took me to see it Saturday night.

Tanis:  So what’d you think?

Nedra:  It was really a great movie.

Tanis:  Oh good! I can’t wait to see it. So, I don’t even really know what it’s about. I just know it’s a cartoon and it’s funny.

Nedra:  It makes fun of Disney a lot.

Tanis:  Oh! So is that… probably the whole audience kinda gets in on that a little bit?

Nedra:  Oh yeah. Yeah you know it has a great ending. Basically the message is that you can be whoever you want to be and you’re beautiful inside and out no matter what.

Tanis:  That sounds like fun! You know I’ve heard so many great things about it – just like it’s hilarious and stuff.

Nedra:  Yeah. It definitely has some adult humor that kids wouldn’t catch but it’s really funny.

Tanis:  Oh that’s great. What was the funniest part of the movie?

Nedra:  Eddie Murphy’s character was really funny. Had some great lines.

Tanis:  Wasn’t he like playing a donkey or something?

Nedra:  He was the designated talking donkey.

Tanis:  (Laughs) So were they sort of playing up the whole like donkey thing you know?

Nedra:  Oh you know they were.

Tanis:  Yeah.

Nedra:  Yeah.

Tanis:  Yeah. That must of been pretty fun.

Nedra:  Yeah.

Tanis:  Well I can’t wait to see it. Is there any recommendation, like should I go late at night so there’s not a lot of kids or…

Nedra:  Yeah. I would suggest that unless you don’t mind little kids laughing. That’s kind of cute too.

Nedra:  Yeah. I would suggest that unless you don’t mind little kids laughing that’s kind of cute too.

Discussion

Compared to “Toy Story”, one of the first computer animated movies, Shrek really stands out. The animation was much better. It was amazing how the artists created things like fire, moving water, fairy dust and the articulate expressions of all the characters.
In addition to the cool animation, Shrek also has an intelligent story. One of the neat things about the movie is that it makes fun of Walt Disney cartoons. I don’t want to give too much of it away, but it makes Disney’s characters all look pretty boring and predictable.
The best thing about Shrek is that it’s fun for both adults and children. It’s a great movie for families to see together.
What’s your favorite fairy-tale movie? Please let us know on the “Movie Madness” message board!
Until next week,
Nedra
