Joe: So Tanis, I heard you saying something about the movie Gosford Park?
Tanis: Yeah, a bunch of us went and saw it the other night. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was great.
Joe: Cool. I haven’t even heard about it. What is it about?
Tanis: Well, it’s a British movie, so it’s kind that, whole, uh, English humor thing going on, but, um, it’s this group of wealthy, British, upper class people who are all uh, gathering together for a shooting party at, um, this mansion Gosford Park, and they have with them, um, their servants who have this whole other drama being kind of enacted below stairs. So they have the above stairs and then below stairs and the above stairs are the rich people and then the below stairs are the servants and then they all kind of at the end are tied together in different themes, but remain separate. It’s, it’s kind of social commentary and, um, humor and mystery and drama. I thought it was great.
Joe: I’ll have to check that out.

Gosford Park gives you a chance to see what it was like to be a wealthy person in Britain during the 1930s.
The movie focuses on two groups – the rich people and their servants. The rich are on the main floor, and the poor are below, in the basement. When they are together on the main floor, everyone acts respectable. When the servants and guests are behind closed doors, they gossip and complain about each other.
Tanis explained the movie well. She said the film has British humor. British humor is very tongue-in-cheek and witty humor. It can go right over your head if you don’t pay attention.
Do you like the British humor? What are your favorite British movies? Tell me about them at the Movie Message Board.
Have a great week!
