Greetings Everyone!

This blog is written to introduce you to the culture and daily life of the United States.

Because the American society is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural one,  I will focus on the common items that transcend the many cultures and the experiences that Americans encounter in everyday life.  The society is very diverse, therefore, the blogs I write will not apply to every person, but in a general sense.  Hopefully enough information will be provided to help you imagine that "You Are There!"

Independence Day Celebration - The Fourth of JulyAmericans love celebrating birthdays!  The birth of the United States began at the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  Since it's the birthday of the United States, it's celebrated as a Federal holiday as Independence Day but commonly referred to as the Fourth of July holiday or the 4th.Here is a brief history of the United States: 13 colonies were established by British America which was a subset of the British Empire.  The 13 Colonies were:Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, Maryland, Rhode Island & Providence Plantation. The 13 Colonies developed their own system of self-government and became enraged with the paying of taxes to England without representation in the British Parliament.  Therefore they rebelled which resulted in the American Revolution (also called the Independence War or American Revolutionary War).  After the war started 56 of the leaders of the colonies signed a "Declaration of Independence" document separating from Great Britain and sought to establish themselves as a separate country, i.e. The United States of America. The 13 colonists were not powerful enough to win against England, therefore, France helped the colonists to fight against Great Britain and caused the British to surrender at Yorktown, Virginia in 1779, however, fighting continued until 1783.In 1789 the US Constitution became the basis of law governing the United States through the federal government.  In recognition of the birth of the US, the federal government signed into law, Independence Day as a federal holiday. Therefore, Americans celebrate the 4th of July with parades, recreation activities, picnics, barbeques, and fireworks. The United States is 235 years old and are friends with the mother country, Great Britain.

Memorial Day Holiday Celebration in the United States

Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May.

  • It commemorates men and women who died while in military service to the United States.
  • Unofficially it marks the beginning of the summer season and Labor Day marks the end of summer on the first Monday in September.
  • The Indianapolis 500 mile and Coca-Cola automobile races are held on the Memorial Day weekend.
  • Many Americans visit the gravesites of their deceased relatives, friends, have family gatherings, fly American flags at half mast (a sign of respect or mourning), fireworks, shopping, trips to the beach, barbeques, picnics, and just have a good time with family and friends.

Now you know the meaning of the Memorial Day holiday in the United States because "You Are There!"

Weah44 and Others,

It's a good goal to write perfect sentences, however, a practical goal would be to improve your writing step-by-step by reading English material and studying how the writer wrote their sentences.  In other words, use de-engineering to analyze written material by identifying the parts of speech such as: object, subject, verb, noun, pronoun etc. of the sentence.  After wards, substitute your words for theirs.

As you increase your reading and writing abilities, you will increase your knowledge of English.  Study the excellent English teachers lessons on this website, my specialty is explaining American English phrases.  I hope this helps.

The American economic system is based on credit, therefore, many people end up in a lot of debt.  Because of the recession in the economy, many people are not using credit as much.  It's good to wait and save to make major purchases, however, it takes a long time to save.  There's been a change in how Americans think and it's effecting the economy.  Time will tell the long term effects.

Yocriz, no, it isn't easy.  The living expenses are generally more on the east and west coasts, generally less expensive in the north, south and middle of the country.  However, it would be best to live near major universities where there is a community of residents from your respective countries but housing expenses will be higher.

Weah44, you made a good effort to express yourself in English, here is my rewriting of it:

It is so helpful, now I get the idea!  You want to combine the study of English with daily life in the United States.  It's really a great idea to learn fast and easy, I appreciate it!

By the way, I have an idea!  I suggest you correct our English or offer some advice concerning writing perfect sentences to express our feelings.  Is my idea acceptable to you?

Weah44 and Others,

You have asked a very good question.

The purpose of language is communicating in a society.  The value of "You Are There" is to introduce the readers to the culture and the people they are trying to communicate with.

It is a vicarious way for you to experience the culture in the United States without actually being there.

It is my desire to use alternative methods to assist in your learning of American English.  I hope this response is helpful to the readers.  Thanks for asking.
