We use the word off in many different ways. Lately when I talk to people about their work, I will say 'what time do you get off' and they won't know what I mean. Here are some explanations about how to use 'off'.

If you aren't working one day, we would say that it's your day off.

When you stop working, then that is the time that you are 'off'. I might say, "What time do you get off?" or, "What time do you get off work?" You would say, "I get off at 4." or, "I get off work at four" No need to use 'the' or 'my'. Just say, "I get off at four" or whenever you are finished work.

If you take a holiday you could say, "I'm taking some time off." If you are stressed, your boss might say, "Why don't you take some time off?"

Those are the ways you can use 'off' for work. For fun, you could say, "Hey, do you like karaoke? I really get off on it." This is slang, of course. Getting 'off' on something means having fun with it. It seems strange to use the word 'off' just before the word 'on' but in this case that's what you have to do. "I help people with English because I get off on helping people."

Off can also mean that you don't like something. "The smell of her perfume really put me off." That means that you didn't like her because of her perfume. "He is a nice looking guy but his attitude puts me off." When off is used in that way with the words 'put me' or 'puts me', it's a negative thing. Rap music puts me off! Not really true, it's an example.

Off can also mean spoiled. 'The cream is off.' This means that the cream is sour or almost sour. I think you would find this used in Britain more than in North America but you will hear it sometime, I'm sure.

Finally, 'got off' or 'get off' can mean something sexual too so you might hear that or read it in a book. It's another phrase for an orgasm. If you remember the Eagles' song, Life in the Fast Lane, that phrase is used as a double entendre in one verse. Hey, I want you guys to know all about English so don't yell at me for explaining this to you. Western movies are full of phrases that aren't really polite but they are all part of the English language and all part of words you hear every day. Song lyrics can be beautiful, intense or raw, as you know. Ask me about anything you can't understand. OK?

Maybe this will help end the confusion you feel when you talk to me and I say, "Is it your day off today?" I hope so!

Thanks for reading.

P.S. I had the title of the blog as "I hope do get 'off' after reading this blog" but I changed it.  First, I saw I had left out the 'you' before do, then I realized that it probably sounded bad after I changed it to "I hope you do get off after reading this blog."  The word 'get' means understand. If you get something, it can mean understand or pick up and bring. In this case I meant 'to understand'. Now you know, right? Do you get it? Got it? Good! :)

I didn't realize it either, Danny. Then I started getting questions when I was chatting with people so I decided to write this blog. The title is messed up though. I guess no one noticed it but me. When you read this, it will be edited. Oooops!

Right now, I have ten friend requests that are just sitting there. I don't want to refuse anyone but I insist that people send me a message or make a comment on my profile page before I accept them. I don't think that this is too much to ask, do you?

I used to have more than 600 friends on Englishbaby. People would ask to be my friend and I would blindly say yes. Then it got to be too much, there were just too many people to keep track of. Some members left, some just disappeared and many of those 'friends' knew nothing about me and I knew nothing about them. At that point, I deleted hundreds of people that I didn't know.

Now, I only accept people who send me a message or make a NICE comment on my profile page.  I may have accepted you without either of those things but there may be special circumstances that I can't get into here. Suffice it to say that if you want to be friends with me all you have to do is send a message or make a comment and ask to be friends on my profile page.

I'm going to write some blogs on oral English and how you can get better at it. It's tough for many of you who have no one to speak to in English. I'll try to help you out in that area. Stay tuned!

Thanks for reading.

It's really irritating to add other person, who we don't know. There si no use to increase the numbers of  unknown friends. The conversation must be took place to be friend.

One of my friends saw a documentary on Canada and thought that we eat seal meat here. I had to gently tell her that very few of us actually eat it but some Canadians actually do eat seal meat. I don't, and no one in the southern part of Canada does but in the far north, the Inuit probably eat it.

Canada is a huge country and has many different groups of native Canadians in it. Some of the natives live just like I do while others live 'off the land'. They hunt and trap and eat food that comes from Nature, not from a grocery store. They are healthy and happy, for the most part, just as native people are all over the world. My group of people are the newcomers. We've only been here for a few hundred years. The native peoples have been here for centuries and actually own this country, in reality. We have taken it over but the land is rightfully theirs, not ours.

In case you didn't know, Canada is the second largest country in the world. Only Russia is larger. China and the United States seem like large countries but Canada is larger. You have to realize that, although we are a large country, we have a very small population, only about 33 million.

Although we speak English here, just like the United States, we speak 'Canadian' English and in some parts of Canada we speak Canadian French. Canadian English means that we pronounce the letter Z as 'zed' not 'zee'. Sometimes we end a sentence with something that sounds like a long 'A'. It's written as 'eh' but in reality it's pronounced like 'Aigh' or 'Ayy', just like a long A. When we spell neighbour, we use the u. In many other words we don't take the shortcut that the Americans do, flavour, harbour, etc.

As fas as accents go, most of us speak the same way as the American announcers on the  news shows speak. Three or four of the best American announcers are actually Canadian. There are some regional accents, most notably the Newfoundland accent, but certainly not as many as you would find in the United States.

There you go! Some information on the giant land of Canada. If you have questions, post a comment or send me a message. Thanks for reading.

Yes you are the person I mentioned. No one else has asked me about seal meat but many people think Canada is covered in snow all year. The Americans, who live right next to us, don't know anything about Canada. I love that because we play jokes on them all the time. Rick Mercer, a TV show host and comedian, goes down and asks them opinions on silly things that show they know nothing about Canada and then puts the videos on TV, on youtube too. They don't even know about their own country either. It's a bit frightening, actually. :)
