Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay

"We've knocked the bastard off!!" these were the first words from a person entered the history as a hero and an icon. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first who reached the summit of Mt. Everest, the highest spot in earth.

Edmund Hillary was born in 1919 and grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. He was a tall, thin, big-boned, and long-faced man. He made his living as a beekeeper, one who raises bees for it's' honey. Hillary was keen about climbing mountains; actually he climbed eleven different peaks of over 20.000 feet through out NZ, Alps, and Himalaya.  After that he joined in Everest reconnaissance expeditions in 1951-1952.

At the year 1953 Hillary joined on The British Everest Expedition. The expedition team retreated at the south peak, all but two, Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a native Nepalese climber. Hillary and Tenzing couldn't quit, not when they had come this far. The two courageous men were the only member of the team who made the final assault on the summit.

On May 29.1953 at 11.30am, Edmund and Tenzing reached the summit of Mt Everest, the top of the world. Thus heroic achievement made the queen of Britain to honor Hillary, Tenzing and the other climbers as Knights.

The journey didn't end for Hillary because he made the best of his fame. He spent the rest of his life helping humanity. On 1960s, he went back to Nepal to aid in the development of the society, building clinics, hospitals, and 17 schools.

"…I came to admire them far more in the years that follow..." Jan Morris, a journalist who accompanied the expedition. Hillary and Tenzing will always stay attached to our memory. They didn't only conquer the mountain; they showed us that human being have the power to do great things. Also, they showed us that success is neck to neck to dare and courage.

Best Wishes
