As a soldier, he brave to fought; as a general, he devoted himself to his country; as a husband, he loves his wife so much, devotion to her, and his love increasingly grew with the years. Such a man, should we respect him or not? So, I will tell you the story of him, Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel, famous general of World War 2.

Erwin Rommel was born in a small village of Germany on 15th November, 1891. He wanted to study engineering but his father disapproved, so in 1910 he joined the German Army.

By the outbreak of the First World War, Rommel had reached the rank of Lieutenant. He fought on the Western Front and in January 1915 won the Iron Cross. One day, in January, 1915, he led three soldiers on patrol in a village of France. He had been working all day, he was very tired. But suddenly, he found more than 20 French soldiers are closing to them. They only 4, but the enemy, more than 20. Then one of his soldiers wanted to go back to report, but Rommel said: “Freeze! Such a silly idea you got. You’ll get the first bullet on you back. We’d better fire right now!” So, they fought against with the French soldiers. Some German soldiers around here heard the shots and came to join them. French Army were defeated. As a result of his brave action, he got the first Iron Cross in his military life.

After the war Rommel remained in the German Army and in 1929 he was appointed an instructor at the Infantry School in Dresden. In October 1935 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and began teaching at the Potsdam War Academy.

An excellent teacher, his lectures were published as a book on infantry tactics in 1937. The book was read by Adolf Hitler. Greatly impressed by Rommel’s ideas, Hitler arranged for him to command his HQ staff. The following year he did the same job in Poland.

He was given command of the 7th Armoured Division that invaded France in May, 1940. His troops moved faster and faster than any other army in military history. He got many victories. As a result of his exploits in France he was promoted to the rank of general.

On February, 1941, Adolf Hitler sent Rommel to command the African troops and successfully drove the British 8th Army out of Libya. He moved into Egypt but was defeated at Alamein by Montgomery. With the USA Army landing in Morocco and Algeria, his troops were forced to leave Tunisia.

In the summer of 1944, Rommel was approached about the July Plot. And in the autumn of that year, Hitler discovered that Rommel was plotting against him. On 14th Oct, 1944, he was visited by two generals who had been sent by Hitler with an order: suicide with a state funeral and protection for his family and staff, or trial for high treason. At last, he took poison and it was stated that he had died of a brain seizure.

I write this because he's my hero. He was so talented that in France, in North Africa, a series of victories made him from the rank of colonel to the rank of Marshal. Marshal is the highest rank in German Army. Only five years, from 1937 to 1942.

And I want to talk about his love, too.

In 1911, he fell in love with a girl by the name of Lucy. Lucy was very beautiful. At last they got married. Since he fell in love with her, his love never faded. No matter where he was, he took his wife’s picture. No matter how busy, how nervous he was in the front, he wrote to her. Until he passed away, there were over ten boxes of letters that he wrote to Lucy.

In addition, Rommel devotion to his wife. He stayed away from other women. He said: “I not only never let other women get the chance but also never leave it to me to make a mistake.” He also said: “Lucy is a part of my life. Turn against Lucy as well as turn against my own life.”

I  admire him so much. He not only won respect from his countrymen, but also his enemies. Churchill said : "Although we fought and killed eachother in this destructive conflict, but please allow me to say, he was a great general." Absolutely right. Although in World war 2, he's a German general and fought with the Union Army, help the Nazi Germany invaded other countries, but it's his duty, he's really did a great service to his country.By the way , he aginst Nazi's kill out policy.

I could learn a lot from him. Of course , there're good influence.
