Call (with no object) can mean  ”telephone”; in British English it can also mean “visit”. This sometimes causes confusion.


  e.g.  A.  Alice called while you were out.


  B. You mean she came round or she phoned?


Does the usage of “call” create confusion in American English too?

In American English, “call” almost always means to telephone. The other usage is out of date.
