The teacher put her foot down and failed all the students who cheated on the exam.


The dictionary meaning of to cheat on is: Be sexually unfaithful to one’s partner in marriage; e.g ”She cheats on her husband”. 


My question to you is can the verb “cheat” be used alone? like He cheated me severally? 



Also I wanna know in the first example, will it be “on the exam” or “in the exam”?

“Cheat” is an intransitive verb that can be used alone. 


Ex: “You will fail the class if you cheat,” or, “The little boy never cheats.”


However, in order to use “cheat” as a transitive verb (verb that needs an object), you need to use the prepositions “on” or “in.”


Ex: “You will fail the class if you cheat on any exam,” or, “The little boy never cheats in his classes.”


“On” is used for a specific exam, paper, or assignment. “In” is used for school, a class or a subject.
