Hi Abhishek,

I can answer grammar questions for you, but I’m afraid that phonetics is somewhat outside my expertise. In this case, I would recommend an internet search. Wish I could be of more help!

Amy

I can often assist with questions about how a particular word should sound, but I do not have training in phonetics. My training is in grammar. My apologies!

I must say your knowledge in grammar is profound and I really appreciate it. But I mean with your permission, can I have someone from your panel who will be able to clear my doubts regarding the usage of American phonetics? I have a fair understanding of the British phonetics but the usage of American phonetics ( especially the vowel sounds) is completely different from its counterpart and I had realized this fact after checking out a couple of words in Webster’s dictionary. So, May be this is the reason when I watch a Hollywood movie I have a hard time understanding the native speakers of America as a great deal of vowel sounds are completely changed in American pronunciation. Those voewl sounds sound alien to me as my ears are used to listening to the British vowel sounds. The best example can be given about this is the movie Mickey Blue Eyes wherein the British actor Hugh Grant tries to immitate American accent as he really needed to learn it. It’s a comedy movie though..So anyway,Phonetically speaking, there isn’t a major difference between the UK and the US accent. The only difference lies in  vowel sounds of both the accents. Apart from it everything else is fine. American Idioms are also different from the British ones and you have some local slangs that vary from state to state in America. Even the Brits have them too. So again, can I have or at least chat with someone who can clarify my doubts in American phonetics?

Best regards,

Abhishek

I am truly sorry that I cannot help you with phonetics. Unfortunately, I am the only English teacher answering Ask Ebaby! grammar questions at this time. It is a limitation that I regret since I’m unable to assist you with this particular question.

That said, I hope you will continue to ask further questions, as I always strive to find and provide answers for you!

Best,

Amy
