Yeah...

But, it's just because I want to read these Koans more often ^^

...................

Teaching the Ultimate

In early times in Japan, bamboo-and-paper lanterns were used with candles inside. A blind man, visiting a friend one night, was offered a lantern to carry home with him.

"I do not need a lantern," he said. "Darkness or light is all the same to me."

"I know you do not need a lantern to find your way," his friend replied, "but if you don't have one, someone else may run into you. So you must take it."

The blind man started off with the lantern and before he had walked very far someone ran squarely into him.

"Look out where you are going!" he exclaimed to the stranger. "Can't you see this lantern?"

"Your candle has burned out, brother," replied the stranger.

Three Days More

Suiwo, the disciple of Hakuin, was a good teacher. During one summer seclusion period, a pupil came to him from a southern island of Japan.

Suiwo gave him the problem: "Hear the sound of one hand."

The pupil remained three years but could not pass this test. One night he came in tears to Suiwo. "I must return south in shame and embarrassment," he said, "for I cannot solve my problem."

"Wait one week more and meditate constantly," advised Suiwo. Still no enlightenment came to the pupil. "Try for another week," said Suiwo. The pupil obeyed, but in vain.

"Still another week." Yet this was of no avail. In despair the student begged to be released, but Suiwo requested another meditation of five days. They were without result. Then he said: "Meditate for three days longer, then if you fail to attain enlightenment, you had better kill yourself."

On the second day the pupil was enlightened.

Right & Wrong

When Bankei held his seclusion-weeks of meditation, pupils from many parts of Japan came to attend. During one of these gatherings a pupil was caught stealing. The matter was reported to Bankei with the request that the culprit be expelled. Bankei ignored the case.

Later the pupil was caught in a similar act, and again bankei disregarded the matter. this angered the other pupils, who drew up a petition asking for the dismissal of the thief, stating that otherwise they would leave in a body.

When bankei had read the petition he called everyone before him. "You are wise brothers," he told them. "You know what is right and what is not right. You may go somewhere else to study if you wish, but this poor brother does not even know right from wrong. Who will teach him if I do not? I am going to keep him here even if all the rest of you leave."

A torrent of tears cleansed the face of the brother who had stolen. All desire to steal had vanished.

Thanks for this very nice comment, Yulia. :)

As for now, the Koan I like the most is 'Teaching The Ultimate'.

I feel pretty much the same as you do..

One is being bilnded not becuase of his eyes, but his mind cannot see (or sense). Yet one still expects others to see him.

................

'Three days more' is the Koan I need the most right now, I guess.

And for 'Right & Wrong'

Well,.. it may sound absurd, but this one reminds me to never abandone myself...  Undecided

(I have a habit of teaching myself :P)

That’s not my post that’s Zen;)

At this moment among these Koans I like most of all “Teaching the Ultimate” Cos I often feel that people cannot hear each other and they can hear only themselves, cannot appreciate their own capabilities and have no enough power to see their own drawbacks,… But sometimes they can,,,,

As for the Koan “Right and Wrong” the method of fighting with bad habits is just the same like in Christianity religion,

I am so narrow minded. Now best of all I like Koan“ Is that so?” What about YOuuuuuuuuuuuuu,Jadd?

I like Aldous Huxley very much, though I’ve read only his “Counterpoint” I I would like to read more, but I have not found him In English. Do you like Huxley? If yes. What is your favorite work then? Concerning passing exams there is some saying in Russia “ the fools are lucky”I’ve experienced it myself. When I was 18 and studied at the University I was asked to be an interpreter for some American tourist. Unfortunately his staying in Russia coincided with my examination. So I knew nothing.exept the one question that we had studied at the seminar and the other question in examination cards was related to my essay on this subject. So my examination card had two those questions  So I got an excellent mark without getting ready to exam.Wink

Dear Agnolia,

I like Aldous Huxley's the most :)

Somehow, I think it reminds me of whom had became now me, and who I would like to be.

For the second question,

Umm.., Actually, I'm quite a coward, since I was a child.

Even now, I can't see horror movies at all.

Lets say that I'm fearful for violence and horror very much.  But, somehow, I don't think I'm superstitious.

Even when I'm being fear of something. I rather rely on my own instinct..and my intuition.

there is someone I knew when I was in college, she really believes in magic power. Like, when she was going to take an exam, she had to find out what is the powerful color for her on that day. She must wear cloths in that certain color, also she had to know the magic number of that day (like powerful number for her on that day is 7, she will do things with number 7 as much as possible). Before the day of the exam, she would go to some holy spiritual place to ask for guarantee of her success and promise to give something in return afterward. Sometime, she will promise to stop eating meat for a month, or promise to give 100 boiled eggs to the holy spirit!, sometime, promise to run around a rugby field for 100 rounds, and etc. Laughing

Somehow, she mostly succeeded, and it's fun to see her do the thing she had promised :D

To be superstitious is not very good.

As for me I cannot get rid of some of them. For example if I leave anything at home. I return home to take the thing and look in the mirror not to be unlucky. What about you ? are you free of all that prejudice? If you are free. Maybe you tell me one of superstition in your country more interesting?

Jadd! really very encouraging saying.

I d like to add one more coz it;s very similar to the way of thinking of Oldos Huxly

"Education is what remains when we have forgotten all that we have been taught"
