According to the report Guyana is one of the countries with the highest suicide rate: 10th of September was the “World Day of Suicide Prevention”. On that day “Domradio” also had a brief report about this issue. Apart from some cold statistics and facts – like this or that event is going to happen today to remind us of suicide prevention or in this or that region this or that number of people commits suicide in an average year – the report also filled a short section with a pastor who said “Many people who survived a half-hearted suicide attempt misinterpret it when after the suicide attempt things don’t change. They think that since despite their suicide attempt nobody bothers to change his attitudes towards them, people probably simply just don’t care. Thus they see this as proof that they were right when they tried to kill themselves. Then they may try again. However fact is that most friends, family members, co-workers etc. in fact do care and are in great distress after the suicide-attempt of their loved one. Why they often don’t react – or rather why they don’t react correctly – may have different reasons. >The most simple one is that they never were informed about this suicide-attempt. This goes especially for distant relatives and acquaintances. >They don’t know what to do to make the suicidal person change his attitudes. After all suicide is a phenomenon that even experts find hard to deal with. Less experienced people soon are overstrained with the situation. >Their brain just isn’t ready to accept the fact that their beloved relative, neighbor or friend is suicidal. They search for multiple explanations, but don’t let the option in that he or she may not want to live anymore.” I don’t know which time it is where you live, but on that international day it is common according to “Domradio” to put a candle in the window at 8PM and then say a brief prayer for someone who committed suicide.
