Hi, Amy. Sorry for so many questions!


1) I think he has ties to governor, so maybe he could help us – why does the “to” preposition follow the word “ties”. Shouldn’t the preposition “with” be used after “ties”, as in “ties with people” etc?


2) “they backed into our car” – what does that mean?


3) is it correct to say “to smooth over one’s guilt” as in: “He is trying to smoth over his guilt”?


4) Amy is now friends with one of her uncle’s children—Facebook friends, that is. – what does “that is” mean in this sentence?

Now, for your questions:


1. When you have “ties to” someone, it means you have a connection to them, like a rope tying two objects together. I’ve heard “ties to” more often than “ties with,” although “ties with” is acceptable as well.


2. When someone backs into your car, he hits your car while driving in reverse!


3. I don’t think we’d use “smooth over” with “guilt.” Usually one smooths over a problem.


4. “That is” means “more exactly” in this sentence.
