Direct/Indirect Speech

Direct: They asked me: “Why should I hire you?”

Will the Indirect speech be: They asked me why they should have hired me.? or what?

Also I’d like to know whether or not we can use passive voice in Indirect speech?

Best Regards,

Abhishek

“They asked (me) why they should hire me, so I told them… “

Could you give me an example of how you’d like to use passive voice in indirect speech? That will help me to answer your question better.

Thanks,

Amy

In indirect speech instead of should can we use “should have” in the first place?

John said: “I should go there”.

What will be the indirect speech of the above sentence?

In my first reply above, you’ll see that I advised you to use “should” and not “should have” when using indirect speech to say “They asked me why they should hire me, so I told them.” If you use “should have,” that would suggest that the people did not hire you, but we don’t know that.

To answer your second question, the indirect speech for “John said: I should go there” would be “John said that he should go there.” If the sentence was “John said: I should have gone there” then you could say “John said that he should have gone there.”

Thank you very much. I appreciate your prompt response. By the way, do you think the same rule would apply if there was “would” instead of “should”?

John said: “I would go there”.

Will it be: John said that he would go there? Please advise.

Abhishek

Yes, “John said that he would go there” is correct.
