Devan:  Weird. I didn’t know that. So it (Hanukkah) is eight days, right?


Mason:  Eight straight.


What does Straight mean here?


and then 


Mason:  I did the menorah every night, that’s the candle holder, but I didn’t play any dreidel. It just totally snuck up on me. That’s kind of the problem with these roving holidays.


Could you please explain the phrase snuck up on and the word roving to me

In this context, straight means that the holiday, Hanukkah, continues for 8 days without any interruption. For example, you could also use straight when talking about a sports game, “The baseball game lasted for 4 hours straight!”


Sneak up on (v.) = approach unnoticed

Mason means that he did not realize that the holiday was happening so soon, so he didn’t have time to prepare.


Roving is an adjective that means moving. Roving holidays are holidays that do not always happen on the same date. For example, Christmas is always Dec. 25, but Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday in November, so it’s a different date every year. It’s a roving holiday.
