Marni:  Lily, I received my invitation in the mail to your dinner party.


Lily:  Oh, great! I’m so glad it found you in time. I’m so excited. It’s such a special occasion!


Lily says, it found you in time. Does the it here refer to the invitation? If so, what Lily says is the invitation found Marni, which doesn’t make sense because I think the invitation is found by Marni(Passive voice). An invitation can’t actively find a person, can it?

Since the invitation was sent to Marni in the mail, it travelled to her house. Lily is using personification to talk about the invitation. It’s true that objects cannot actually find a person, but Lily is just using figurative speech to say that she’s glad the invitation arrived before the party.
