Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Imagine that you’re a runner. You wake up early in the morning for your daily run. It’s cold out, though, and you know you’ll damage your muscles if you start running right away. You decide to start by doing some stretches, to warm up. You’re preparing your muscles for the run ahead, and you’re also literally making your body warmer.

It’s not only runners or athletes who need to warm up before they perform. A piano player might warm up by doing some scales and hand and finger exercises. An actor might warm up by practicing lines and imagining what it’s like to be her character. These people are all getting ready whatever “muscle” they need to perform.

The “muscle” singer Janelle Monae uses is her voice. If she went on stage without warming up, she probably wouldn’t sing very well, and she might damage her vocal cords. Therefore, she warms up before she sings by using an app on her iPad to practice some scales and other vocal exercises.

Do you ever warm up before you perform in some way? What do you do?

Examples

“I got that question wrong, but I’ll get the next one right. I just have to warm up!”

I like karaoke and I usually go to sing once a week.

The first song I sing is always the same one. I know the song is the easiest to sing for me.

Maybe the first song of karaoke is a kind of warming up.

Every week on my chorus practice we have to warm up before to start. You can really hear the difference that it makes.
