I want to make new friends

Thailand

Hello everyone my name is Joy. I am a Thai national but I am now living in England with my English husband. We have no children but I love shopping, cooking, spending time with my friends, etc. I want to make friends who want to practise English the same as I do. I have an English husband but in my opinion it is better not just learn how to speak English but also to learn about other cultures, languages and make new friends. I hope to hear from you soon.

Bye for now.

Dear Sam,

Thank you very much for your reply. I, very much, enjoyed reading your long message. It was impressive to me to learn about some of your experiences. You have had a lot of adventures around the world visiting many different places.

I have only visited three other countries other than England that being France last summer for a holiday, Burma for a visa renewal and the Maldives for my Birthday a couple of years ago.

I find that this web site has a time out limit for writing. This is a problem for me if I write a long reply. I have had to start using a word processing package and then cut and paste in order to beat the time out!! How do you manage to write your long message in time? Are you very fast at typing as well as thinking in English?

Your job is very interesting and impressive. How do you manage to think in one langauge and translate to another and then have to change the thinking and speaking languages the other way round for the replies?

Your English is so very good, how did you get to such a high standard? Did you study in China or have you studied abraod in an English speaking country?

I used to be a financial consultant in Bangkok before I came to England but now I cannot get a good job in my specialist field because of my language difficulties. Writing is easier to correct before sending. Speaking is the most difficult to get right first time.

I hope to hear from you again soon.

Hi Joy,

Thank you for your mail. I think your English writing skill is all right now. You can effectively communicate with other people in English. So I see no problem why you cannot get employed in an English-speaking country, where people tend to be more lenient and generous to those who speak even rusty English.

Again I would reiterate that there is no short cut in perfecting a foreign language, except going in for it and applying yourself wholeheartedly to the practise of listening,  speaking, reading and writing at the same time. AS you are in Britain now, why not take the initiative to get yourself exposed to the language environment by making local friends and communicate with everyone possible in your life: your teacher, fellow students, neighbours, shop assistants, whomever.

For my case, I started learning English from a very hard beginning. First and foremost, at the time when I determined to study English as my hobby, China was experiencing a political storm – Cultural Revolution. However, the present young people will neither realize nor understand it. As it is by far not cultural at all, it ended up to be a brutal and barbarian nightmare in contemporary Chinese history. Millions people died of political persecution, arrest, detention and outright execution without trial. As I was too young to be involved in all that, I was affected in my way: I lost educational opportunity as all the schools in China, from primary to intermidiate and up to colleges and universities were all shut. I have to stay at home reading my English textbooks left over from my early days in middle school before the political upheaval. Soon I was not satisfied with those simple and irrelevant textbooks, but out of my dismay, I could find no English books for me to read as a textbook, because the then Chinese government ordered to remove or destroy all those books printed in English, citing it as an "Imperialist Language", therefore should be eliminated.

The above is the basic situation I started learning English by self-teaching. The content of this letter is too small to describe all those events, if you have the patience, I will tell you bit by bit, a tortuous path of academic endeavor filled with sweat and tears.

With best regards,

Sam
