I want to make new friends

Hello everyone my name is Joy. I am a Thai national but I am now living in England with my English husband. We have no children but I love shopping, cooking, spending time with my friends, etc. I want to make friends who want to practise English the same as I do. I have an English husband but in my opinion it is better not just learn how to speak English but also to learn about other cultures, languages and make new friends. Thank you very much for your reply. The temperature in Moscow is very much colder than England. How do you manage to get on with the cold weather? Have you any special clothes or anything to keep you warm? I do not think I can stay in 10-12 degrees bellow zero, it is too cold!

I hope you enjoy your day out with your friends. I have no knowledge about how to take a good picture. I just bought an Olympus – E510 SLR digital camera for one of my friends this Christmas. He was a photographer and won a photo competition many years ago.

I did not like digital cameres in the past, I thought they were too complicated to use. It was also difficult to find a shop to print the pictures and they were too expensive.  Now I prefer digital cameras in place of 35 mm cameras because I can take lots photos and can save or delete them. The photo print shops are now everywhere or you can keep them in your computer. The price is now so cheap.

I am facinated by the words you write. I am a politically aware person in my own right and can understand that you must have gone through very difficult times. In fact I am most moved by your words and have visions of the students in Tiananmen Square standing up to the tanks! I am almost in tears at the thought of the students being arrested and executed for their actions in bringing discredit  and embarrassment on the Chinese Government. Is it this time that you refer to or the time before, when Mao Tse-Tung rose to power? I recall hearing about the burning of books written in English.

How times change, and now the investment in the development of the Chinese economy is putting China in a very significant position in the world. I feel that this is a move in the right direction and is similar to the way the Japanese economy developed. I trust the Chinese economy will not burn itself out in world markets in the same way as the Japanese economy seems to be doing. I understand that unemployment in Japan is rising rapidly as new technology replaces people in the job market!

I am most impressed at the way you have learned and improved your English. To learn from old junior and intermediate textbooks at home must have been really difficult. I have heard of people in other countries like Russia learning English from watching American films on television and listening to world service radio broadcasts in English. It is quite remarkable that people can motivate themselves to such an extent as you have done.

I am most interested to hear your stories of the trials and tribulations of learning English in such difficult times and other academic endeavour.  look forward to your further installments in due course.

Thank you very much for your reply and I am evry pleased to reveive a massege from a lovely Thai lady from Thailand.

Why do you want to study English in the UK? I think there are lots of good schools, language schools and universities in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok, where you are living and working. Many of them have American, English and Canadian teachers. You could save money for food, travel, accomadation.etc if you study in Thailand. The scholarship could help you a lot if your application is successful and I hope it will be.

One other thing is, if you are studying abroad, you might feel unhappy because everything will be so different to what you are used to.  For instance, your life-style, food, culture, and people are very important things. You will also miss your family very much.

Anyway,I hope we can be friends and perhaps I could meet you in England if you get your scholarship. I usually go back to visit my family in Thailand every year and stay there for 4-6weeks. I like shopping at the Saun Lum Night Market because it is not too hot in the evening and has wide variety of choice for gifts suitable for both friends and family.
