2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

The slang word trip has many connotations. Originally it
was used to express the experience people feel when
they take drugs like marijuana, LSD, Ecstacy or mushrooms
because taking those drugs was like going on a fantastic
journey (or trip). A bad experience on those drugs was
called a “bad trip.” A person who takes drugs often may
be called a “tripper.” Later it came to mean simply to be
surprised or in a state of disbelief. Also, many African-
Americans used it with the meaning to act crazy. If
someone is being irrational, nervous, angry or paranoid
you might say that person is “tripping” or “tripping out.” Variations of this use include: guilt trip (n.): when someone makes another person feel
guilty about something ego trip (n.) when a person is intoxicated by their ego power trip (n.) when someone is intoxicated by power “

“Many Japanese are dead wrong on trip, saying, for instance, “I tripped…”, instead of saying “I travelled…” I’d also used trip in the wrong way like above until my American friend told me about the mistake. His correction made the word trip special in my mind. My basic understandig on trip is to lose one’s mind over drugs like: I stoned out. I spaced out. I tripped. Now, it’s time to rack my brain. I the passage, Eddie doesn’t trip on drugs obviously, but I guess his mind gets excited as if he gets a shot, releasing his mind immediately to anywhere in a different status.”
by Yoshinobu (Yokohama, Japan)
“To trip, in that meanin’ is to be very interested in something. Eddie is interested in the process of the people’s laugh. (Another meanin’ for trip: experience, a good trip, a bad trip, or just a trip)”
by Eduardo
“I guess “to trip” means that you’re amazed by some good, exotic or funny new experience.”
by Flavio (Lorena, Brazil)
