Eating out can be expensive. Cooking at home can be a lot of work. But leftovers are both cheap and convenient.

Any time you have more food than you can finish, and you decide to save it for another day, that’s leftovers. Leftovers can come from something you cooked yourself, or they can come from a restaurant. If you can’t finish your dinner, you can always take the leftovers home by asking the waiter for a to go box or doggie bag. Hear Marni and Ella talk about leftovers.

Ella

Marni:  Ella, I am so full, and yet I still have like half of my meal on my plate.

Ella:  I know, what are you going to do? You don’t want it to go to waste.

Marni:  You’re absolutely right. Hello! Leftovers!

Ella:  Woo! I love leftovers.

Marni:  Me too. I mean, I don’t like to let anything go to waste.

Ella:  I find myself wasting leftovers a lot. I like having them there, because then I don’t have to go buy food. But then sometimes I just don’t eat it because I didn’t like the food already at the restaurant, but I felt obligated to take it home. But it usually goes to waste and I end up throwing it away.

Marni:  That’s too bad. That is a big waste of food. I don’t know, I always tend to eat them, because I’m pretty particular and I usually order something I like. Or if I’m somewhere at an event or something and there’s a bunch of food, I’ll always ask if I can take some home, because I’m kind of a fan of free food, or leftover food.

Ella:  Sometimes leftovers are looked down upon.

Marni:  You know, that’s true. I was in Venice, and I asked for a container to take my delicious pasta back to my hotel room, and the woman just looked at me like I was crazy. And I guess the entire city just doesn’t…They don’t take anything to go.

Ella:  I can’t imagine that.

Marni and Ella are out to eat. Marni is full and can’t finish her meal. She and Ella agree that she should take the rest to go so she can have the leftovers on another day.

Both Marni and Ella like leftovers. But Ella often lets her leftovers go to waste. She forgets to eat them, or takes leftover food home from restaurants even if she didn’t really like it.

Marni, on the other hand, hates letting food go to waste. She always takes leftovers home with her if she can’t finish a meal at a restaurant. But in some places, this is unusual. When Marni was in Venice, a waiter was very surprised when she asked if she could take her leftovers back to her hotel with her.

Do you like eating leftovers? In your country, is it normal to take your leftovers home with you when you can’t finish your meal at a restaurant?

“Snob my pants!  Hand me a damn doggie bag or I’ll start barking at you for the dog you think I am, I paid for my food right?”  I’m only kidding.

If you  think asking for a doggie bag is something to feel ashamed of, wait until you hear about what I called “the doggie cup” (:

…So my mother and I are eating at this buffet. My mother asked for an extra -large soda cup,

(: surprised I asked “Mom, so’ you drink sodas now?” she replied “boy, I’m going to show you something”. As soon as I heard that, I started to melt in my seat. I begged her desperately not to do anything that would embarrass us. She smiled…  Too late! There’s no stopping her now. She crammed the cup with left-over meat; squeeze the lid back on, and for cherry on cake, topped it all with a straw. I was sweating with embarrassment, and could not dare to look around in fear of locking eyes with anybody. Well, apparently this place didn’t allow patrons to take out any left-over, but they’ll turn a blind eye on drinks. So we left, her “doggie cup” in her hand. (:

Anyways I just had to tell a story.

I usually go to take-out restaurants, mainly to avoid the “doggie bag” drama; but I never ask for a “doggie bag” when I opt to seat and eat. Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with eating left-over, but if you could spare the time to cook daily, it’s also fine. It might have something to with my bachelor life style or being a student, but I sometimes find food to taste better when heated the next day.  I love my microwave I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. (:

Tip: If you go to a restaurant for the first time, especially a foreign one, refrain from asking for a doggie bag, this is not McDonald’s drive-thru. Please travelers avoid culture shocks and disasters, by educating yourself about their unique code of conducts, not just landmarks.

I never recall asking for a doggie bag while on a date at a restaurant—I don’t think I will ever do that.

Would you?Tongue out

I never ask a waiter for a doggie bag :) You go to the restaurant, you pay for the food, plus tip 20% and you enjoy it there, at the table. But if I take something with me, I think I’ll be looked down on. People might think I’m short of money or so hungry that can’t stay away from eating at least for one sec or two. I’m, like Marni, order something what I like and enjoy it. My stomach can still fit that amount that’s on my plate. But to take it home, it would be, I think, a different taste, a different atmosphere—leftover! Another thing when you cook the meal at home, there’s always a lot of left, so you just pack it in different containers and eat it until it’s eatable. Thanks God we have refrigerators and don’t have to throw it away.

julito, my parents in law are 80 and 71 years old. They faced the war and they know all “circles of hell” because of Second World War, but despite this, nowadays they ashamed to ask for leftovers at a restaurant. I must admit, my parents in law and majority of Belarussian people don’t visit restaurants very often. It happens once in 100 years. As a rule, people in Belarus prefer to arrange the celebratory dinner because of birthday, anniversary etc at their homes.

I feel sorry when I have to waste food. Because of this, I usually order something I like. But eating leftovers is not a problem for me. In my place, it is a quite normal to take leftovers home, but depends on the restaurant and the food.
