MTV Movie Awards

Date: Jun 12 2002

Intro

If the Acadamy Awards seem a little too stodgy for your tastes, or if you just really don’t care who won the award for Best Lighting in an Animated Feature, check out the MTV Movie Awards instead.
The MTV Movie Awards cast a more irreverent eye at the film industry. While they give the standard awards like Best Female Performance and Best Movie, there are also awards for Best Kiss and Best Fight. The MTV Movie Awards are definitely geared for a younger, hipper audience, and it shows.

Brett

John:   You get a chance to check out the MTV Movie Awards last night?

Brett:   No, I missed them. How were they?

John:   They were pretty good. About the same as every year. A little bit different line-up of nominees though from the typical award shows.

Brett:   Yeah, they seem to gear their awards show much more toward the, the younger, MTV audience than they do on the, uh, in the regular Academy Awards.

John:  Yeah. Like, for example, Shrek was nominated. And that movie Legally Blonde. I mean, they’re both pretty good, but I don’t know about Best Movie of the Year.

Brett:   So then, I’ve got to ask you, who did win Best Movie of the Year?

John:   Uh, it was one that actually I think you enjoyed quite a bit. Uh, Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring.

Brett:   Yeah, you know I did see that movie, and, um, you know I, I was thinking about you because I just thought, you know, The Hobbit sort of thing. You told me how you liked that stuff in high school. But, um, but it was a good movie. It had really good special effects, and, um, it doesn’t really surprise me that it won Best Movie of the Year at the MTV awards, although it would have surprised me if it had won at the Academy Awards.

John:   Yeah, I don’t even think it was nominated. And then, Will Smith won for Best Actor in, uh, Ali. That was a good movie.

Brett:   Yeah, that’s one I’ve been meaning to rent. I don’t really know the Muhammed Ali story, and I heard Will Smith did a good job, so I definitely want to catch that one. Were there any, uh, good performances, or anything really, you know, surprising that any of the attendees did?

John:   No, not like in the past years. I mean, the biggest surprise to me was that Osbourne daughter performed. She sang. You know, the one with the pink hair?

Brett:   Yeah, I know who you mean. Did she sound very good? I mean, is she in a band? Or, uh, was she, you know, as crazy as her father, with, you know, with the really intense stage show? Or was it just more of, like, you know, a regular band?

John:   It wasn’t as crazy as her dad, that’s for sure. But, uh, I have to give it to her. She did a pretty good job.

Discussion

The MTV Movie Awards are are a good place to find out what the youth of America finds entertaining at the movies. Nominees get more points here if they are good kissers than if they play a convinicing Hamlet. Plus, the celebrities all have a great time at the show, and it seems like it truly is a pleasure just to be nominated.
Do you think the awards went to the right people? Speak your peace on the Movie Madness board.
See you next week-
Brett
