The Divine Secrets of the *_Ya-Ya Sisterhood*_ is a movie based on the book of the same title. Originally published in 1997, the book was a huge success and spent many weeks on The New York Times Bestseller list.
Hoping to further cash in on the success of the novel, the film version recently hit the theaters. Let’s hear if Nedra thinks the movie lived up to its expectations.

Nedra:   My mom was in town last weekend, and we went to see that movie, The Divine Secrets of the *_Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and Brett, that was not a very fun movie.

Brett:   Really? I, I’m kind of surprised. I mean, I remember there was a lot of hype prior to that movie because, um, you know that book was so popular, whenever that was, a couple years ago. And then I remember the commercials, but what was so terrible about the movie?

Nedra:   First off, I’m not a big Sandra Bullock fan. So I think that definitely played a role in my liking the movie. And, um, I don’t know, it’s just predictable. It wasn’t very exciting. The, all the ladies were pretty funny and cool, but overall, I mean, it just wasn’t what I wanted.

Brett:   I mean, it was a pretty good cast, wasn’t it? I remember the, the previews on TV. It showed there was, um, Ashley Judd and, and a couple other people, I can’t remember who all it was. But, that always, you know, particularly frustrates me because, you know, you see all these people and you respect their work, and, you know that they can do good things, and then when they don’t it’s such a let down.

Nedra:   Yeah, I think that’s, that was a big part of it too. Um, yeah, Ellen Burstyn was the mother in the movie, the older mother. And she, you know, she just wasn’t herself. She’s played, she’s been in so, I mean she was in, um…Okay, Ellen Burstyn was in Requiem for a Dream, and she, that was an awesome performance, and I’m, I’m afraid that you’re not going to see that kind of performance in this movie.

Brett:   That’s too bad. It sounds like you should have gone to another movie, or just uh, stayed home and barbequed or something.

Nedra:   Yeah, I was tempted to sneak out and have my mom come join me in another theater. Maybe go watch Spider-Man*_ or something.

Brett:   Better luck next time.

Discussion

It’s sad to say that Nedra was let down by The Divine Secrets of the *_Ya-Ya Sisterhood*_. It can be very difficult for a producer to turn a well written and popular book into an equally popular movie. This is especially true when a movie is released in the summer months, when there is more competition and audiences are more fickle about what they will spend their money on.
Are there any movies coming out soon that you are excited to see? Tell us about them on the Movie Madness board.
Until next time-
Brett
