25th Hour is a powerful new movie directed by Spike Lee and starring Edward Noron. Set in New York City, the film covers a lot of territory, including family, friendship, romantic relationships, race, love, hate, pain, fear and the events of 9/11. It’s a deep and heavy movie, full of things that will make you think.
Josh recently saw 25th Hour. Listen to his conversation with Migs to hear what he thinks about it.

Migs:  Did you say you saw the 25th Hour?

Josh:  Yeah, I just saw it last night.

Migs:  How was it? I thought it looked really good.

Josh:  It was pretty good. Um… You know it’s a story about a guy on his last day before going to prison for seven years, for dealing drugs. And, um, it just really made you feel like you could put yourself in his shoes. You really felt his anxiety and terror about going to jail for so long.

Migs:  So, he was obviously caught by the police or something and he’s already been through trial and now he’s about to go to jail?

Josh:  Yeah, the story doesn’t really show the, the trial or anything, but it does have him, like, wondering who he can trust and who turned him in and, you know, all the thoughts associated with, like, this terrible situation that he’s in now. And it was interesting that it was a, it was a Spike Lee movie, so I feel like he told the story differently than anyone else would have. You know he, he has a lot of style and he uses music really well. So, it was a really enjoyable experience.

Migs:  Is it like heavy, dramatic movie, or is it… What’s the sort of genre, or whatever?

Josh:  Yeah, I guess it’s a drama. It’s not, I mean, it’s not a funny movie and it’s not an action movie, so I guess you’d say it’s a drama.

Migs:  So, I’m getting a recommendation, like I should definitely go see it, like it’s high on your list, or it’s just like a so-so movie, or what?

Josh:  It was high enough on my list that I went out to see it, you know, that I went out to see it – and, uh, if you miss it in the theaters – definitely rent it.

Migs:  OK.

Discussion

I saw 25th Hour last night, and I agree with Josh – it’s a good movie. It’s the first movie I’ve seen that actually focuses on the events of September 11th and the way the events affected people in New York City. Although the story is about a drug dealer who has been caught by the police, the movie is much bigger and more important than one individual.
Watching 25th Hour is a valuable experience, especially if you don’t live in New York. It helps you understand the way real people are dealing with the way the city changed and the way it’s stayed the same. I highly recommend it.
See you at the movies!
Anna
