Hi everyone!

I am writing this tiny blog post from my apartment near the sea in the state of Maine, USA.

My name is Heather and I'm a native speaker who has taught English for several years. I enjoy working with my students so very much. I teach both in person and online, and have worked with people from most parts of the world. What a treat it is, especially during these difficult times, for people to be able to communicate with one another as acquaintances and friends instead of focusing on what politically divides us!

I will post short blogs whenever I can and hopefully, someone will find them helpful!

Tonight, I would like to address "GONNA." I almost want to cover my eyes and run when I see this word! :) Or cover my ears when I hear it!

I have noticed over the past couple of years that students are using "gonna" more and more in their written assignments.

For those who haven't seen "gonna" before, it's a slang/abbreviation for "going to" (referring to the future).

Examples:

I'm gonna take the dog out for a walk around the neighborhood.

Mom, I promise I'm gonna do my homework!

One day I'm gonna become a vetrinarian because I love working with animals.

My message:

I implore you to stop using "gonna" so liberally; especially, please, don't use it in your written work!  It's a VERY lazy expression and it's not that much shorter than saying "going to" so there is no excuse! :)

I hate to think Americans are modeling this terrible behavior for you. Unfortunately, my influence can only reach so far. So, let's start a movement against "gonna"!

Anyone want to join me? if so, all you have to do is stop using it. Easy!

GONNA...well, it's just GOING TO have to go!!!

Hugs,

Heather

Hi!

How are you Dear  tutorheather?

Thanks a lot for your attention, most of American native speakers who I have talked to, said what you mentioned, (don’t use abbreviations in formal writing or even in any writing) something like ( u = you , idk= I don’t know, wanna = want to , gonna = going to , and …) you are completely right but the fact is , we are learning a language and we have to learn your culture too , if we don’t know  the meaning of those things, in fact we would have some important problems in any communicating with your people, Because they are using them so common and easily. And we have to learn them as they mean. We have to learn common English not just whatever we have in our books which are different from the common English. If we talk Based on our books, it seems we are computers who are talking that are boring, so the live and common English is better than grammatical communicating which just some English teachers may use it.  Of course we have some problems like this in our language but they aren’t as common as your problems, all of Farsi teachers and … are worry about the structure of the language and want to help others to protect it from some foreign words and … but it is so difficult because the speed of making and using the slangs and… is so faster than the speed of correctors, and it is against of making an easy and common language to use. If we believe we have to find and make the easiest language to make communicating with others, and if the main function of a language is just making communicating. What we have to do but learning those things and using them? Have you ever talked to a teenager – someone who doesn’t know you are an English teacher or an adult, on the net orally? If so, you have seen, you need to learn many new things to understand those teenagers. Slangs are growing up faster and faster and the speed of our correcting them is so slower than it. Sure we respect you and all teachers but the fact is different from the issue and we can’t make a communication with others if we don’t know the slangs. And we weren’t some people who made them at all. Of course your mention is useful and respectable. I have had this kind of problems when I was talking with Americans, therefore I tried to learn t and use them to understand those words, sentences, phrases and …

It’s my pleasure to talk to you and learn something any time from you, hope you forgive me for being honest, and I need a lot of things in English to learn.

Have a nice time

Regards

Sina

Yes! Excellent point. Don't even get me started on finding internet abbreviations in students' papers... :-/
