Although it’s played all over the world, there aren’t many things more American than bowling. In this sport, people roll a large, heavy ball down a strip of wood called a lane in order to knock down pins, which look like fat, upside down table legs.

Bowling takes place in bowling alleys, which are big buildings with lots of lanes. People can play by themselves, against one other person or in groups. A lot of people have an organized group that competes regularly against other groups in bowling leagues. Jason has a creative idea for who he and Mason ought to go bowling with…

Jason:  Let’s see if we can’t find some girls here, dude…

Mason:  Oh yeah. I’m into that. Yeah.

Jason:  And then, take ‘em bowling.

Mason:  Bowling?

Jason:  Yeah. It’s the classic American date. They’ll love it.

Mason:  Really?

Jason:  Oh yeah.

Mason:  I thought, like, baseball was the classic American date.

Jason:  Maybe. I feel like baseball is the American pastime.

Mason:  Okay. I’ll indulge you, I’ll indulge you. Bowling.

Jason:  Well it’s competitive, so that’s ah…You know, you can have a little tension there.

Mason:  We could have teams. I could have a girl on my team and you could have a girl on your team.

Jason:  Totally. And we could be teammates. Then we could bond with them. And then, like, it’s kinda cute if they’re doing really poorly, like, they keep bowling granny-style or something, you can get bumpers put on there and it’s just silly. It’s fun.

Mason:  Dude! And you then you show them how to do it right.

Jason:  Yeah! Demonstrations. Totally.

Mason:  Because that’s, like, the chivalrous thing to do, is be a gentleman and just show them how to play the game.

Jason:  Well let’s find some babes and go bowling.

Discussion

Jason and Mason are at the mall, just hanging out, when it occurs to Jason that it would be find to try to meet some girls and go bowling with them. Mason is a little skeptical at first. but decides he’ll listen to Jason tell him why bowling would be a good date.

Jason says that bowling is competitive and it can be fun to play a game on a date. Mason suggests that there could be teams, one girl and one guy on each team.

If the girls don’t how to bowl very well, the date will be even better because Jason and Mason could show the girls how to bowl properly. They would have to hold the girls’ hands and position their arms. It could be sort of romantic.

In the United States, bowling is played with 10 pins. But a lot of countries have different forms of bowling. Do people bowl in your country? What’s it like? Do you think bowling makes a good date?
