Is it ever OK to cheat? Most people would probably say no. Not ever! Cheating is inexcusable, and it’s not fair to the people who studied. But cheating definitely happens, and there are people who believe that it’s no big deal to get the answers to a test beforehand. How can people feel so differently about something so serious?

The fact is that what seems serious to one person isn’t a big issue to someone else. If your friend believes that she won’t get into the university she wants to attend if she doesn’t cheat a little on her exam, she might do it. In her opinion, no one is getting hurt, so it’s OK. But another friend might feel that cheating is always foolish and wrong. He might tell his teacher about your friend who cheated. People’s feelings about cheating are definitely on a spectrum.

Marni cheated on her test, and Jessica is shocked. Read what she says in today’s English lesson about the choices people make.

Marni:  So, I had to take this huge test the other day, and I kind of cheated on it a little bit.

Jessica:  Marni!

Marni:  What?

Jessica:  Cheating is inexcusable!

Marni:  Really? Oh, come on. It was no big deal.

Jessica:  Did you just glance at somebody’s paper? Or…

Marni:  I just happened to see a few of the answers beforehand, and so I went in knowing.

Jessica:  I guess you couldn’t help yourself if you didn’t prepare for it, Marni.

Marni:  Well, I did study and everything, but I…

Jessica:  That’s better.

Marni:  ...I just thought “This is a gift.” The teacher was foolish enough to just leave the answers lying out. So I happened to glance over, and that’s not my fault!

Jessica:  Well, it’s true. And you usually get good grades. It’s not like plagiarism or anything.

Marni:  Well, no, but… do you think it’s inexcusable?

Jessica:  Kind of.

Marni:  I knew you were going to say that.

Jessica:  It’s OK. Don’t do it again, though.

Marni:  All right. I won’t.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni did something that Jessica believes is inexcusable. She cheated on a test. Marni says that she saw a few of the answers to the test because her teacher forgot to put them away. She says that seeing the answers was like getting a gift.

Jessica knows that Marni wants to hear that it’s OK that she cheated, but Jessica doesn’t really believe that. She asks Marni to promise that she’ll never cheat again, and Marni agrees. The conversation is awkward and difficult for the two friends.

Do you know anyone who has cheated on a test? Is it a serious problem, or is it no big deal?

So the principle was aware and did nothing…I guess she had the same reason like those teachers – the school must have higher scores. It’s pity to admit.

All in all those students won’t succeed much. Their real level of education is poor….grades are grades but real knowledge is more essential.

Cheating on a test is actually a desperate attempt of someone who pretty knows will fail, and this happens not beacuse lacking of studying, but for being lazy.

@Julito, what your cousin faced is a common problem. I believe it’s not just in the US, but in every country. Same happens here in Turkey too. It’s unfortunate.

@ S&W , hello. you are so right to the core. Teacher ability  sometimes is assessed  by how   students  do on tests. But what happen when you have non native students with a difficulty to learn in english and also come with psychological traumas  ? The teacher may be the best in the world but if the student is incapable – for diverse reasons-  of assimilating   a new language , math- etc, etc.  Here the teacher have a problem if the class is below the minimum score required to pass the test.

@Julito,I believe what you wrote is true .When the teachers individual incentive and pay rises are decided by enrolment rate which may brings vicious competition.Hope everything went well at the end.

@ Julie , thanks a lot.  My cousin took it personally ,as the cheaters didn`t stop from doing this , with the proof in her hands got into the principal`s office to inform her. She was adviced to keep quiet about it . Cheating in school is a serious matter in the US, most probable if the school district  gets to know about this irregularity the two teachers could be suspended or fired. My cousin was about to retire so she stopped  worrying. Because of this she had peaks of high blood preasure , no use to continue if her health was at risk.

The incentive to cheat is highly correlated with what is at stake.  For example, in preschool, it’s pretty rare to see a child copy another classmate’s finger painting because not much is at stake.  However, in high school, getting good grades means getting into a good college.  That’s where I was first exposed to the temptation of cheating on a test.  I recall one class where the teacher gave the same multiple choice test every year.  Students taking the test could get the answer key from upperclassmen who had already taken the class the year earlier, and come up with some type of mnemonic such as “Every Day A Big Cat Buys Dinner” (EDABCBD) to memorize the answers and get a high grade (missing a few questions on purpose to remove suspicion of cheating).  I can neither confirm nor deny involvement in this practice.

I have had an experience like Science boy – even if I was about to cheat I had an idea everybody knew about that. So I failed. But when I saw the others cheating I did not mind. After all life will show who is who and what is what. Sometimes ppl who got medium grades are much more practically skillfull rather than those who have diplomas with excellent grades.

I am sorry for Julito’s cousin, she was fighting for truth. Hope at the end she succeeded, did she?

This is real and I swear to God because i was a witness of this. What if the cheaters are the teachers that want to fool the Principal and the School District  making them believe that your students  are able to achieve high scores during the exam ? . I was in California living with a cousin, she was an elementary school teacher and during this time she caught red handed two colleagues handing out to their students the answers to the test. My cousing was furious and warned them to stop or she would go to the Principal  . Afterwards she was sneered at  and segregated  during the recess hour.

I don`t blame Marni , by  putting the test on plain sight she was offered a golden opportunity  to check if she would succeed or not during the test.

I didn`t have to cheat on my tests , not that i was so brilliant  that i needn`t to , on the contrary , i didn`t like to study  , i was young and inexperienced , i was only thinking in  graduating from elementary school and find a work from 9 to 5. My teacher new that and gave me the undeserved certificate to continue with my life. Later on , i decided to enroll in secondary school and  due to my lack of  previous studies i ended up being another dropout  after the first year.  No one to blame but me.

I am not gonna say I was always a honest student but I really tried to be. I always studied hard for my exams and I wanted to get what I deserve. I tried to cheat a few times though but never was successful. I am a terrible cheater. And the shame I felt after being caught was the worst punishment I have ever had.

I remember my college days. All of my friends were cheating but I wasn’t as I knew how bad I am at cheating. But one day, we were in the class waiting for the professor before an exam and I saw everyone was writhing things down on papers, on tables or rubbers. I was the only one who is just sitting and waiting patientlessly, then I thought why am I the only one? I started to write some notes on a paper too, but then I heard professor shouting at me. “Hey, glasses! What the hell are you doing!” I mumbled a few words but had no excuses. My friends always joked about that day ever since. “You tried only for once and got cought”

I know sometimes my students cheat too. One day I was foolish enough to forget my briefcase in classroom with exam papers in it and a student stole a paper but he was foolish enough to tell this to his friends. So other students told me and I had to change the questions.

In most cases cheating, no matter what, is viewed as an unfair approach to pass. Why is it unjust? Simply because it does not represent the real image of whoever’s doing it. In addition, diligent students working so hard to excel would be treated as same as his/her peers who cheated in the same exam only if not being caught in the act of CHEATING. I really appreciate the hard-working students for their efforts and time, and at the same time, warn cheaters to stop doing it, as there might be one dark day when they will be questioned or perhaps suspended.

To win the glory, you have to try hard regardless of the circumstances that your are enduring and then feel the taste of success, a success made merely by devoting your self to the subject and digging into it till you are knowledgeable of what you are studying. By the way, as you review your materials over and over, the state of your comfort and confidence will more likely to increase as much as possible.

Nice lesson. It brings back the memories of my school days.

Like many students I have also tried to cheat on tests occasionally, but my teachers were very smart and it wasn’t that easy to pull the wool over their eyes. Once when I was in 10th grade I got caught and my teacher made me kneel down on sand in the hot sun for several hours. I never cheated after that.

In my teenage years cheating didn’t seem like a big deal to me, but now I strongly feel that cheating is inexcusable. And I think it’s the duty of parents and teachers to try and get this point across to the children at an early age.

@S&W, it’s not a question who ever cheated. I would ask if there are many people who cheated successfully… Those who have a quick wit often cheat successfully and that’s a test for mental faculties in some way )))

Yes ,I know someone was cheating on a test. That’s me!!!May i ask is there anyone had never cheated on a test or never have a thought to cheat?I have no idea whether it a serious problem or not.Sometimes people were forced to take part in an exam especially you are a student, who cares how hard you study in usual, did u prepare for the exam.Preparing cheat sheets ,writing words on hand are the ways to reduce the pressure before a test.As you prepare those, you got some confidences for the exam,Who knows it can be used or not.

Tests are bad anyway. Students can either guess, or get the answers to a test beforehand.  Let them give full answers to questions! That’s what we always did.

I cannot define if it’s serious or no big deal but as I remember when I was a student I tried a few times to use cheat sheets. I thought I could but in reality I saw the teacher looking at me every time I wanted to cheat…at least it seemed like he or she was looking exactly at me. So there was nothing to do but rely on my brain. A good thing in it was that while writing the notes I remembered information and it was easy to remember and then pass through the exam successfully.
