If you love exercise, you probably love riding your bike. It’s the perfect way to travel and work out at the same time.

Riding in a city can be scary sometimes. You definitely have to pay attention to the rules of the road and, for safety, wear a helmet. When there are bike lanes, it’s easier to know where you should ride. You don’t want to fight for a spot with a car when you’re on a bike!

Some people ride bicycles just for fun. Other people use them for everyday transportation. Either way, bicycling saves money and reduces your carbon footprint.

Find out who loves to bike in this English lesson.

Marni:  Man, I’m so out of breath. I just biked five miles to get here.

Amanda:  You rode your bicycle over here again?

Marni:  Oh my gosh, it’s awesome! I love getting exercise while I get from Point A to Point B.

Amanda:  I know, but it’s so complicated. The rules of the road are different.

Marni:  Well, yeah, but they’re not that different. You ride with traffic and you obey the traffic rules. It’s pretty easy.

Amanda:  You know how it rains here all the time.

Marni:  I know.

Amanda:  So you have to wear that gear. Pants, hat, coat…

Marni:  It’s nice to have good rain gear. It definitely helps. But I think it’s manageable. The great thing about living in a city that supports biking is there are bike lanes, so there are designated spots for bikers and for cars. If everyone is courteous and obeys the rules of the road, we’ll all get there safely.

Amanda:  Come rain or shine, huh?

Marni:  Absolutely. I am dedicated to this. I feel so good. I’m getting so much exercise, I’m not spending money on gas, I’m reducing my carbon footprint. I feel like it’s a win-win-win!

Amanda:  I just am anti-bicyclists, and I feel like they have no sanity at all.

Marni:  Well, that’s not fair. I mean, you could say the same thing about drivers. So I think that we need to make an effort as bicyclists and motorists to all get along.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni arrives to a meeting with Amanda, and she can barely breathe. She biked five miles, and she definitely got her exercise!

Amanda seems a little bit annoyed with Marni. She talks about all the reasons why biking is hard work, such as following traffic rules and wearing rain gear.

Marni doesn’t change her mind, though. For her, it’s easy to know the rules of the road. Because her city has lots of bike lanes, she doesn’t have to worry about where to ride, either. She likes saving money, getting exercise, and helping the environment.

Unfortunately, Amanda doesn’t agree. She doesn’t like bicyclists at all. She and Marni will have to agree to disagree.

What’s your opinion about bicycling? Have you ever disagreed with your friends?

That’s awesome. Riding a bicycle is one of my favorite activities. But bcz of my work situation in the other city i missed it for almost the last 2 years. There are lots of reasons to be a bicyclist. Work out, be in fit, carbon footprint and others significant reasons make me to do it and be pleasant of that.

I live in Holland and I think you all know that Holland has no mountains. Every person in Holland has his own bike. They start to learn cycling at a young age. Everywhere in Holland are bike lanes. In the big city’s, like Amsterdam, people transport themselves mostly by bike, bus or tram. It’s kinda impossible to drive with your car.

I go to school on my bike everyday. I cycle 30 km everyday. No matter the weather, wind, temperature, snow or not, i take my bike.

Cycling can be fun and amazing, but for many people here its just a habit, like driving your car. For me it can be fun when its a good day, little bit of sun, the wind in my back. It can be a kind of freedom. You can go everywhere on your bike. Cycling in the snow can be fun either. It can be a big adventure when the road is covered with ice and snow.

I’d used to cycle a lot before last summer when I was knocked off my bicycle by a car. Apparently, knowing the rules of the road didn’t save me from what happened. Anyway, I do look forward to getting a new bicycle and hope to be more lucky this time.

I think it’s undisputed that bicycling is very useful for body and enviroment too. When I was kid, I lived in a small city and rode everywhere by bicycle. Although there was no bike lane, it was safe because there were few cars on the road.

Since I started university and moved in a big city, I haven’t used bike. Now I prefer public transport but when weather and my time allow, I like walking.

Unfortunatelly, riding bike is seasonal. You can’t ride in winter because the road slips and dangerous, and you can get sick easily.

In my opinion, bicycling is the one of the good sports, and also, it will be helpful to make sound body. Unpportunately, I didn’t get a chance for riding bicycle because of heavy traffics in Jarkarta. Many people prefer to use motorcycle as a means of transportation not bicycle in Indonesia. Air pollution is really bad in downtown area in Jakarta. If you want to ride bicycle, you have to wear a gas mask to protect your bronchial tubes. In these reason, many women enjoy riding bicycle as a fitness equipment indoors. It’s a good tool to make sound body without any danger.

For a short distance exercise, bicycling can be fun but defiantly is not safe to use it to commute here in Taiwan. Although, there are bike lanes here, they are not connected. Besides, people are rather insensitive to care about the traffic rules. In fact, people in Taiwan are one of the worst drivers in the world. There are thousands of traffic accidents happened every day here. So I will strongly recommend the foreign tourists not to use a bicycle for travelling in Taiwan.
