Videos were nominated this year in 21 different categories, including Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best Dance Video and Best Video from a Film. The three most coveted awards are Best Video Of The Year, Best New Artist and Viewers Choice.
The nominees for these three awards and my winning picks:
Best Video Of The Year
NSYNC
‘Gone’
Linkin Park
‘In the End’
P.O.D.
‘Alive’
White Stripes
‘Fell in Love with a Girl’
Nas
‘One Mic’
Migs Pick:
Eminem
‘Without Me’
Why: Eminem continued to be the most intriguing artist in the music business in the past year. His newest CD proved again that while his lyrics can be abrasive and offensive, Eminem truly is a musical genius.
“Without Me” isn’t the best song of the six, but it is the best video. It features Eminem as a super hero who is trying to save a child from the evils of the world. The interesting thing about the video is that all the evil in the world is represented by Eminem’s music. If the super hero can stop the kid from listening to his CD, he will save the day.
Best New Artist
Puddle of Mudd
‘Blurry’
Ashanti
‘Foolish’
Avril Lavigne
‘Complicated’
B2K
‘Uh Huh’
Migs Pick:
John Mayer
‘No Such Thing’
Why: The Best New Artist award is one of the most important because it usually signals the beginning of a long and meaningful career in music for the winner. Past winners include Macy Gray, Eminem, Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette.
I know Ashanti will win the award this year, because she’s become the biggest star of the five nominees, however, I’m choosing John Mayer because he’s by far my favorite. I love his music and I think he’s going to have a long, long, long career in the music business. I think the others will be gone in 2-3 years, but John will be around for the next 20 or 30.
Viewers Choice
Brandy
‘What About Us?’
P.O.D.
‘Alive’
Michelle Branch
‘Everywhere’
B2K
‘Uh Huh’
Eminem
‘Without Me’
Migs Pick:
Enrique Eglesias
‘Hero’
Why: The Viewers Choice award is probably the most significant of all the awards. It shows who the fans like the most, because the fans choose who wins. In fact, you can still cast your vote for the winner. Click here to go to MTV.com and make your selection.
Choosing a winner in this category is tough. I like the Eminem video, but I have the feeling it’s not going to win. I’m leaning towards Enrique, but it’s just a hunch. His video featured Jennifer Love Hewitt, who is extremely beautiful – giving the video a lot of appeal to both men and women.

Discussion

The MTV Video Music Awards are always fun to watch. Just about every celebrity in the music business comes out to watch or perform at the awards. This year, Jimmy Fallon is hosting the show. He’s one of the stars of Saturday Night Live[/def] and is very funny, so the show should be great.
Don’t miss it!
