On September 5 and 7 of 2001, a group of superstar music artists came together in New York City to record a new version of Marvin Gaye’s classic song, “What’s Going On.”
The artists’ goal was to raise awareness and money to fight the disease AIDS in Africa.
After tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, the group decided to donate 50% of its proceeds to the United Way’s September 11th Fund and 50% to the AIDS relief effort.

First recorded by Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On” is a song that asks the people of the world for compassion, healing and love. The timing for the new version couldn’t be better. We’re all in need of love at the moment.
Here are some of the lyrics:
Mother, mother
There’s too many of you crying
Oh, brother, brother, brother
There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today
Oh my father, father
We don’t need to escalate
You see war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today
The new version of “What’s Going On” was recorded by: Christina Aguilera, the Backstreet Boys, Bono (U2), Destiny’s Child, Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Eve, Nelly Furtado, Ja Rule, Wyclef Jean, Alicia Keys, Aaron Lewis (Staind), Jennifer Lopez, Nelly, *_NSYNC, P. Diddy, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), and _Michael Stipe (R.E.M.).

Discussion
First of all, I love the song “What’s Going On.” It’s been one of my favorites since the first day I heard it. Second of all, the group of artists who came together to record this song couldn’t be cooler. I think it’s wonderful that they all gathered to do something like this. It reminds me of “We Are the World,” a song that was recorded by the most popular music artists of the 1980’s.
