2002 was a great year for music. Rock finally returned to popularity – pushing some of the bubble gum pop music out of the way to make room for itself. Britney, Mandy and Christina took a second seat behind Avril Lavigne, who writes her own pop/punk songs. Groups like the Backstreet Boys and O-Town were relatively quiet, while rock bands like The Hives, The Vines, The Strokes, and The White Stripes became MTV favorites. On top of that, we had classic albums by Wilco and the Flaming Lips.

My Top Ten Albums of the Year:
1. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
~ Wilco
Reason: Simply the most interesting and most innovative music/songwriting released this year.
2. Sea Change~ Beck
Reason: An album packed so full of sadness and feeling that tears seem to be dripping from the CD case.
3. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots~ The Flaming Lips
Reason: You don’t hear music like this very often. It’s totally unique. Listen to it!
4. Missundaztood~ Pink
Reason: Pink makes pop music with feeling. Her songs are just as catchy and danceable as anyone else’s, but they actually mean something.
5. Come Away with Me~ Norah Jones
Reason: There’s no way to argue with the beauty of her voice. It’s unmatched. It’s dripping with honey. It’s perfect.
6. Room for Squares~ John Mayer
Reason: The guy is just so cool. He wrote a song called “Your Body is a Wonderland.” Nobody else out there could sing a song like that and still sound so sweet and innocent.
7. Rock Steady~ No Doubt
Reason: They rock. Every song on the album is good. Gwen Stefani is so irresistible that it would hardly matter if her music was terrible – but it’s not. It’s amazing.
8. The Eminem Show~ Eminem
Reason: Eminem is a musical genius. There’s no two ways about it.
9. Highly Evolved~ The Vines
Reason: Rock is back – and The Vines know how to rock.
10. Under Construction~ Missy Elliot
Reason: The best hip-hop album of the year had to make the list. Missy tells it how it is – and has fun doing it.

There were so many great albums released this year. It was hard to narrow it down to ten best. If you’re a music fan, you should have all the CDs on this list. If you’re not a music fan, you should still have all the CDs on this list. They’ll make you a music fan.
Here’s to 2002! Let’s hope 2003 rock just as hard.
Rock on,
Migs
