English, baby! recently moved into a new office in downtown Portland, Oregon. There have been some eerie sounds in the hallways, and Didi thought she saw a ghost.

Listen to Didi tell Kevin about what happened.

Kevin:  So, tell me, Didi, you thought the office was haunted? Why?

Didi:  Because I, ah, went down the hallway to the bathroom, and it’s at the very end of the hall. And there was no one behind me and no one in front of me, and I went in the bathroom, shut the door, and there was obscure glass in the door…

Kevin:  Oh!

Didi:  ...and I saw a person walk by…

Kevin:  Oo, That’s creepy.

Didi:  ...twice.

Kevin:  So, at the same time, twice, or on two different occasions?

Didi:  Two different occasions.

Kevin:  Oh, that is creepy. That would scare me.

Didi:  Mm hm.

Kevin:  Anything else. Any other strange noises, or?

Didi:  No. I’ve heard that there’s a weird smell in the summertime, but I don’t know that that has to do with ghosts.

Kevin:  Find out about that soon enough. I don’t know.

Didi:  And, um, but when I told people about it, it stopped happening, so.

Kevin:  So the ghost, maybe it’s a friendly ghost.

Didi:  Yes, it could be.

Discussion

Every culture has its own ideas about supernatural beings. In the West, ghosts are often thought to be troubled spirits, or spirits that are not able to move on to the next world. In the East, especially in Asian cultures, many people believe in reincarnation. They think that ghosts are spirits that refuse to be reborn.

Of course, there are many skeptics around the world who do not believe in ghosts. What about you? Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever seen a ghost?
