It seems like everyone has a cell phone now. In the United States alone, over 224 million people use cell phones. It has become more common to see folks everywhere talking on the phone. No one seems to mind if the whole world hears their phone conversations. People answer their phones during dinner in a restaurant, at the grocery store, in the movies, anywhere they can.

But what about talking on the phone while you drive? It can be dangerous. Some countries have made it illegal. But it is still common in the States.

Listen to Emily and Logan talk about dialing and driving.

Logan

Emily:  So, I heard Chicago has this new ban on driving with a cell phone in your hand. You have to use a hands-free set. Have you, have you heard about this or do you… I mean, have you heard anything about that, like, spreading out to other cities?

Logan:  I’ve actually heard on the news here locally that they were talking about putting that law into effect but they never did. And I don’t think it would really work. Are they gonna pull over everyone with a cell phone in their hand?

Emily:  Well, don’t you think it’s a little bit dangerous for people to be driving with handsets in their hands and not fully paying attention?

Logan:  I think it’s very dangerous. Uh, but there’s, there’s new devices now that come out with, you know, headsets and everything…

Emily:  But not everyone gets those and not everyone uses them. And that’s their point is that they want to mandate a law and that’s what they did in Chicago and that’s why I think it’s such a good idea that they did it there because they’re gonna mandate this law that you have to use a headset and it’s really for your own safety. It’s sort of similar to the bike helmet law. I mean, it’s for your own protection, and people are, like, “Whatever. We don’t want to do it,” but it’s like, why not? It’s for your own protection.

Logan:  Yeah, I think it’d be a good idea to get the kids that just turned sixteen and are driving around and have cell phones, ‘cause they don’t really know how to drive, first of all, I don’t think, at that age. And to actually have a cell phone while driving, I think that’s really… could cause an accident real easy.

Discussion

Emily is right. In Chicago, it is now illegal to drive a car if you are holding a cell phone. You have to use a hands-free set. If you don’t, you will be fined. She thinks the law is a great idea because it will make everyone safer.

Logan agrees that it is dangerous to drive with a cell phone. He thinks kids who have just recently started driving are the biggest risk.

Do you think talking on the phone while you drive a car should be illegal?

Do you think it’s rude to talk on the phone in public?

yup i think during driving the car taking on the phone is illegal. because it is not about car owner protection but also about others who are on the road at the same time because while you taking on the phone and driving you not paying attention on that means it is dangerous for us.

but no i don't think so that talk on the phone in public being a rude because some time you have to talk but it's not means that you cross your limit and distrube to others.
