We found out that Emily got cheated on when she was in high school. She was really hurt. She has never cheated on a boyfriend.
In that same conversation, Mason confessed that he has cheated on previous girlfriends.

Mason: I rationalized it because I was…
Emily: You were lonely?
Mason: We were both, no, no, no… We were both young, and, like, I have this very cynical view of relationships that, you know, a relationship that starts before a certain age, I think, is kind of doomed to fail so…
Emily: Agreed.
Mason: Really, what does it matter? Um, not that this, any of this, makes it more OK. But… And then the other thing is, you’re just kinda like, anyone who spends a prolonged period of time away from their significant person…
Emily: Is bound to cheat.
Mason: It’s just, it leaves that wiggle room, you know, and… Now I’m totally of the school that if you cheat on someone, you don’t, you don’t tell. You don’t fess up to that. And I’m a big honesty person, but that’s one thing that does not need to be discussed.
Emily: See, I would think that that would just eat away at me because I know how painful it was to be cheated on.
Mason: Well, then you better not cheat. If you can’t stomach it… If you can’t stomach it, you keep it in your pants.
Emily: So, did it, did it… I mean, it wasn’t disturbing to you at all? You didn’t feel like karma was gonna come back and bite you in the butt?
Mason: Maybe that’s why I haven’t, like, had a girlfriend in a while. Um, I didn’t think of it at the time.

Discussion
Mason thinks that relationships between super-young people usually end at some point because it takes maturity to sustain a long-term relationship. That attitude, combined with long periods of time traveling and away from his lovers, helped him justify his infidelities. He does admit that it was never really OK.
When Mason says “significant person,” he means “significant other.” “Significant other” is a term that means boyfriend or girlfriend or spouse.
Furthermore, Mason believes that cheaters must never confess.
Emily says there is no way she could live with such a dark secret. She also worries about karmic repercussions.
Should cheaters confess their betrayal? Or should they live with the lie?
