Hey man, do you, like, know what a hippie is…man? Whoa, man, hippies are, like, those people with long hair and beards making peace signs and smokin’ weed, man. Can you dig that? You know, man, all the naked people at Woodstock in the ‘60s and all that.
But dig it, Marni used to be a hippie. Can you believe that? She was real into it for a while, man, but it turned out to be a bum trip. Listen to her tell Amanda about it.

Marni: So, Amanda, I was looking through these old photos and I was thinking of you and I…because I was going to bring some and I was like, “You know, if you see these, you’ll be questioning me, you know, what’s up with the hippie…” I have to admit I was a total former hippie.
Amanda: Well, what’s your definition of a hippie though?
Marni: I was Birkenstock wearin’
Amanda: What else?
Marni: Tie-dye shirt with the Guatemalan pants…
Amanda: Did you shower?
Marni: I was very fond of showering and I did shave,
Amanda: So just the clothes?
Marni: Attire, music, very into the Grateful Dead...yeah…
Amanda: Okay. Did you follow them?
Marni: As much as I could…
Amanda: Till he died…
Marni: I kinda opted out a little bit before Jerry died, but yeah! I was very into it. I have to say at the time it was a lot of fun.
Amanda: What was the turning point when you woke up and said, “I’m done being a hippie”?
Marni: Interestingly enough, when I moved to Oregon.
Amanda: That is interesting!
Marni: I moved to Eugene to be with my people, I thought it was like Mecca, I got there and realized, “I don’t want to be like these people.”
Amanda: That’s so weird. Because I went to school in Eugene too. Green Tortoise. Followed the Dead.
Marni: Gotta love it.
Amanda: Scared ya straight.
Marni: It did.

Discussion
Marni almost brought some old pictures of herself to show Amanda, but she decided not to because she used to be a hippie and she was worried Amanda would make fun of her. Amanda asks Marni what exactly she means by saying she was a hippie.
Marni explains that she used to wear Birkenstocks, a kind of shoes that hippies wear, as well as other clothes typical of flower children. Unlike many hippies, however, Marni did shower and shave.
She liked hippie music too, especially the Grateful Dead, the most popular band among hippies. Like many hippies, Marni traveled to see the Dead over and over. Jerry Garcia, the leader of the Dead, died in 1995, around the time Marni was a hippie.
Oddly enough, when she moved to Oregon, a place known for its hippies, Marni quit being a hippie. She implies that Oregon is to hippies what the holy city of Mecca is Muslims.
Do you have hippies where you live? Do you think there’s any chance that you might be a hippie?
