Migs recently celebrated his birthday and had a great time. He’s lucky because his birthday is July 4th, which is Independence Day in the U.S. Every year the country celebrates with fireworks and barbeques. And because it’s a holiday, Migs always has his birthday off! How cool!
In this lesson, I ask Migs questions about how he spent his birthday this year. Check it out!

John: Dude! Happy birthday! The big two seven.
Miguel: Hey, thanks a lot.
John: How does it feel?
Miguel: Uh, I’m happy about the birthday but not so much the age. But, you know I had a great day so it’s all good.
John: It seems like you had a bunch of parties to go to and stuff?
Miguel: Well, not parties so much but I had birthday… and I had a birthday breakfast in the morning and then I, uh, had a party on a boat on the river in the afternoon. And then another party, uh, at Tanis’ place last, last night.
John: Yeah, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to make it to the, the boat party, but Tanis’ was cool.
Miguel: Yeah. The only bad part about the boat was I think I may have gotten a little sunburned.
John: You’re lookin’ pretty red!
Miguel: Well, I was out there all day and, uh, the only sun-block they had was 48 and I figured that was just too strong. I wouldn’t get a tan at all.
John: So what’s it like having the entire country celebrate your birthday since it is Independence Day?
Miguel: Well, see the thing is Independence Day happened so long ago. I’m pretty sure everyone’s just forgotten about it and I think they all celebrate for me, which is great.
John: Uh, I don’t know about that but if it makes you happy, I’ll go with it.
John: Uh, I don’t know about that but if it makes you happy, I’ll go with it.

What do you think? Is he a lucky guy, or what? I have to say that I am a little bit jealous. It seems like I always have to work on my birthday!
At the end of the conversation Migs says that he thinks the country has forgotten about its own birthday and everyone is celebrating his. Of course he is joking.
Ok, let’s see how well you understood the conversation. On to the quiz!
Talk to you next week!
Your American friend,
John
