Every year, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation sponsors an event called, Race for the Cure. Every participant in the event runs or walks in a 5k race, and their participation helps earn money that is put toward finding a cure for breast cancer.
Last weekend Nedra participated in this event in Portland, but there are Race for the Cure events in more than 100 cities in the United States. In fact, Race for the Cure is the largest organized series of run/walks in the world!
Listen below as Nedra tells Miguel about her experience!

Miguel:   So Nedra, tell me about this race thing you did last weekend?

Nedra:   Oh, yeah. It’s called Race For The Cure, and it’s basically people running and walking to support breast cancer.

Miguel:   Oh, okay… So, are they raising money for, for, like, research for breast cancer, or, what?

Nedra:   Yeah, exactly! Either you pay a fee to run or walk, or you have people donate money, or you have a sponsor.

Miguel:   How many people do it? Like, hundreds, or thousands, or…????

Nedra:   I guess this, uh, last Sunday there were 45,000 people out and about.

Miguel:   45,000 people just in Portland?

Nedra:   Oh yeah, definitely!

Miguel:   Is it a national thing too? Do you know about that or is it just Portland?

Nedra:   It’s national. I’ve had other people tell me they’ve, uh, participated in it.

Miguel:   So… It’s, it’s right in the city, right? I mean, I saw people running around with t-shirts, like, on Sunday afternoon.

Nedra:   Yeah. Um… They close off two of the bridges. It’s right in the heart of the city. It’s really awesome because, um, there’s lots of people, and they’re very excited. They’re all about supporting each other.

Miguel:   Is it a competition? Like, do people really try to win the race?

Nedra:   Um, not really. Maybe some of the runners do.

Discussion

Nedra participated in a very special event last weekend. It sounds like she had a wonderful time. I did the Race for the Cure event down in Southern California a few years ago, and it was one of the most inspiring things I have ever done.
