Hello!
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S.. Millions of people love to watch the game because it’s so exciting.
March is one of the best times of the year for basketball fans because the nation’s best college teams battle in the national tournament. Sixty-four teams enter, and in three weeks, only one team remains – the champion.
It’s a tradition among groups of friends and at many offices to hold a competiton to see who can pick the winners of each game in the tournament. Each person in the competition usually puts in $5 or $10 and the person who chooses the most winners gets to keep all the money.
Listen to John and Miguel discuss the tournament pool they took part in.

Miguel:  So what are you gonna do with the hundred bucks that burning a hole in your pocket?

John:  You mean the money I won from the NCAA tournament?

Miguel:  Yeah. That’s exactly the money I’m talking about.

John:  I don’t know. This is the first time I’ve ever won the office pool. It’s kind of exciting. I can’t really decide what to do with the hundred bucks.

Miguel:  Yeah, that must be a tough problem to figure out.

John:  Who’d you pick to win the championship? I picked UCONN and since they won, I won.

Miguel:  Yeah, that’s funny. You know I picked UCONN too. I just, uh, made a few earlier picks that weren’t very good. But, next year I’ll get ya.

Discussion

I’m happy for John, but I have to admit, I’m pretty frustrated. I did very well this year. I chose many of the winners, but I chose the wrong team to win the championship. If I had only chosen UCONN, I would have won the $100 instead of John.
Oh well. I guess I’ll just have to wait until next year.
Have a great week!
Beth
