2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

So, the name sounds German? Well, it may be. But the fun, the excitement and the craziness is 100% American. Imagine this. You build a flying machine. You get inside. You launch yourself from a 30-foot cliff. You’d have to be insane to do something like that, right? See what John and Derek have to say about Flugtag in the next dialog.

Dialog

1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

John:  Did you check out Flugtag last week?

Derek:  Uh, no. I didn’t make it there

John:  Oh, man, it was so cool.

Derek:  Really? What did you see?

John:  Well, ya know, they have, uh, 25 different flying machines that people build and then launch off of a 30-foot cliff. It’s pretty awesome!

Derek:  That would be an interesting thing to try out next year.

John:  I don’t know. I wouldn’t recommend it. It looks like it hurts. They come flying off that edge, and they land on their machine. And, I’m surprised no one went to the hospital.

Derek:  Well, maybe that’s part of the thrill.

John:  It must be. But I think you have to be crazy to try something like that out. It was pretty cool. They all did little skits before they flew out. Like, one group was from Star Wars. They had an X-Wing Fighter. And, uh, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader were fighting with their light savers. And then Luke Skywalker got in the ship and he took off, off the end of the platform.

Derek:  Not a very successful escape, I take it.

John:  Well, he got away from Darth.

Discussion

All this talk has sparked my interest in flying. I have always wanted to learn to fly but haven’t had the nerve. One time, I was in the cockpit of a plane. I was flying from Hungary to France when I saw the pilot walking around the aisles of the airplane. I was like, ‘hey, shouldn’t you be flying this thing?’ He laughed and told me that flights were mostly automated and offered to let me have a look. It was so cool to be in the cockpit, seeing the airplane cruise to the right, all on its own. Hey, maybe I could borrow that airplane for next year’s Flugtag!
