Quote

1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“I could safely say I’ve had a couple of relationships I
really enjoyed, that I knew right off the bat were not
going to be, in the long run, constant.”

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

immediately, at once, right away

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

This slang phrase comes to us from the game of baseball.
When a batter hits the ball, the players can tell as soon
as the ball leaves the bat, whether he has hit a home run
or not. So, if you know something immediately, you know
it right off the bat.

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

“Kristy and Mark didn’t get along right off the bat, but eventually they became good friends.”

“My mom says she knew right off the bat that I was going to be a singer.”

“Mark bought a used car for $200 and it broke down right off the bat.”

“I wish I had realized right off the bat that Tanya was a gossip. I never would have confided in her.”

Winners

1. Winners - See who guessed the slang definition correctly.

“I understand that it means – ‘from the very beginning.’ It’s usage would be like… ‘I knew that I would fall in love with her right off the bat.’”
by Juyoung
”’Right off the bat’ means ‘from the first shot.’”
by Predo (Backa Topola, Yugoslavia)
“I guess that ‘right of the off’ means that someone gets a reaction in mind so quickly, right away, immediately. It look like a ball right off the bat. By the way, the slang of this week isn’t a piece of cake.”
