Jane: Well, summer’s over.
Stephanie: Yeah.
Jane: It really is hard to go back to school.
Stephanie: Yeah it is. But I don’t think it’s as bad this year since we’re Seniors.
Jane: I know. It’s a lot easier when, like, the end of it all is so close, to…
Stephanie: Yeah.
Jane: ...like, so close in sight.
Stephanie: I heard it goes by really fast, too. Last year went by fast.
Jane: Yeah. I’m glad though. But the only thing is, it’s kind of scary. Like,...
Stephanie: Yeah, I don’t know what I’m doing next year…
Jane: I know!
Stephanie: ...where I’m going.
Jane: Now we have to, like, become real people who have real jobs. I like Senior Year because, uh, you get to take a lot of classes that, uh, you chose, that weren’t required.
Stephanie: Yeah. That’s how most of mine are.
Jane: Yeah. What’s your favorite class?
Stephanie: Well, probably my athletic leadership class. What about you?
Jane: Films.
Stephanie: Yeah. They’re both fun.
Jane: Yeah, they’re pretty…
Stephanie: ...mellow…
Jane: ...mellow, laid back.
Stephanie: Yeah.
Jane: Do you have a lot of friends in your classes now?
Stephanie: Yeah! A lot!
Jane: Me too, and I never used to! I always had, like, strangers in my class and now I know everybody. That’s kinda nice. Sometimes it’s distracting.
Stephanie: Yeah.

Discussion
You can tell by the conversation that Jane and Stephanie are excited about their Senior Year. You can also tell that they are nervous about what happens after Senior Year is over.
High school is usually divided into four years – Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. There are usually three terms in a year – Fall, Winter and Spring. Summer is vacation time!
Hopefully this lesson helps you understand what it’s like to be a Senior in high school. I remember it as one of the most fun times of my life.
Your American Friend,
John
