Many different kinds of newspapers exist in the U.S. If you’re in a big city, you’ll be able to find more news sources than you’ll ever have time to read. Here are some of the most popular:
USA Today
USA Today is a national newspaper that’s available all over the U.S. Unlike most other papers, USA Today doesn’t focus on any specific city or state, but rather covers news across the whole country. Because of this, the news isn’t as in-depth as you’ll find in local papers.
Local Newspaper
The local newspaper in the city you’re in is full of information about nearly every topic under the sun. Whether you need to know a movie time or what the weather’s going to be like, you can consult your local paper. And, the best thing about local papers is that they’re easy to find. Most cities have a newspaper box at every major intersection.
Wall Street Journal
If you’re interested in very detailed information about complex issues like politics or economics, the Journal is the best place to look.
Weekly Alternative Newspaper
Most U.S. cities have an alternative paper. Large cities like New York or LA may have several. Usually issued weekly, alternative papers contain diverse viewpoints and often focus on issues that the mainstream media is avoiding. For example, alternative newspapers may print reports on extremely controversial issues that bigger papers are unwilling to print.
Neighborhood Newspapers
If you want to learn more about the things happening in the area where you live, you should look for a neighborhood newspaper. Usually issued monthly, neighborhood papers are focused on the issues facing the people who live in a very small area. Reading a neighborhood paper is a fun way to understand what’s happening on the streets that you walk on every day.

Discussion

I’m addicted to the newspaper. I have to read it every morning. Even though I can read the news on the internet, I still prefer to read the paper. I just like the feeling of holding the paper in my hands and reading it while I eat breakfast.
I often wonder, will people still be reading newspapers in 10 or 20 years? It seems like everyone is getting all of their information from the computer, or even the mobile phone, so maybe they won’t need newspapers anymore? I don’t know…
Happy newspaper reading!
- John
