Everyone knows what it means to be cool. If you’re cool and you’re a student, kids want to sit next to you at lunch. If you’re cool and you’re a teenager, people want to spend time with you after school. If you’re cool and an adult, people want to hang out with you or be seen with you. When you’re cool, you’re popular.
If someone tells you to play it cool, it means that you’re acting a little strange and you need to calm down. Someone might tell you to play it cool if you’re extra nervous before a test, or if you want to ask a pretty girl out on a date but can’t seem to do it. If you need to play it cool, it’s because you’re acting in a way that isn’t necessary. Relax, calm down, and just play it cool.
Why is Gary telling Brian to play it cool? If you continue reading, you’ll find out in today’s English lesson!

Brian: Hey, do you guys know when Lily gets back?
Marni: I can’t remember. Rafael, do you know?
Rafael: She said she’d be back next Friday. Why?
Brian: Just curious.
Gary: Brian, you need to play it cool. I know you like Lily, but do you want everyone to know?
Brian: No, not really. I’ll try to be more discreet.
Gary: Good idea.
Jeff: So, why are you asking about Lily?
Brian: Me? No reason. I thought that someone should water her plant.
Rafael: Water her plant?
Brian: Yeah. The one that’s on her desk.
Jeff: Right.
Brian: So, Marni. How long have you worked here?
Marni: Years. I can’t remember how long it’s been.
Brian: How long has Lily worked here?
Marni: She started roughly a year ago.
Brian: Does she like the job?
Marni: Maybe you should be asking her these questions.
Brian: Yeah, sure. It’s just that she’s not here, so… I was just curious.
Jeff: You’ve been mighty curious today, huh?
Brian: I have no idea what you’re talking about. I should get back to work.
Rafael: “Just curious”?
Marni: I know, right? Could he be any more obvious? Frankly, though, I think it’s very sweet.
Gary: So, how did it go? Did you play it cool?
Brian: Totally. Yeah. Nobody has any idea that I like Lily.
Gary: I’m sure they don’t. It’s all a big secret.
Brian: Definitely.

Discussion
Brian is asking a lot of questions about Lily. He wants to know when she’s returning from her vacation. He wants to know how long she has worked at AmericanDreamD8.com. He wants to know if Lily likes her job.
Brian thinks he’s being discreet, but everyone knows that he’s interested in Lily. It’s so obvious! Marni, Jeff, and Rafael discuss Brian’s interest after he’s gone. Even though they laugh, it seems like everyone is OK with the idea of Brian and Lily possibly dating. Maybe they even think that Brian and Lily would make a fun couple!
How long can Brian keep his interest a secret? Will he play it cool when Lily comes home? Is it hard for you to play it cool?
