Most of the time, when food is moldy, we throw it away. Green spots or white fuzz are a sure sign that we shouldn’t eat that food anymore. However, one kind of mold is very popular and delicious: cheese!
Since there is such a wide variety of cheeses available, it’s common for people to enjoy eating at least one type. Like milk and yogurt, cheese is a type of dairy food. It can be healthy, but it can also cause problems for people who are lactose intolerant. They might not be able to resist the yummy cheese plate at a party, but if they eat too much, they’ll end up with a stomachache, or worse, later.
Marni and Lily both love cheese, but one of them might need to stop eating it. Why? Read on to discover the reason in today’s English lesson about fine food.

Lily: What’s wrong, Marni?
Marni: I think I’m lactose intolerant. I just ate an entire plate of cheese, and I don’t feel well.
Lily: Oh, that’s so sad. I love cheese.
Marni: So do I. But I just think that I need to stop eating it.
Lily: Well, what kind of cheese did you eat? Because maybe it has something to do with the kind of milk it was or something?
Marni: It was a real variety of different cheeses. I had some hard cheeses, and then I had some soft cheeses, some were sheep’s milk, goat… I think it’s the dairy, though.
Lily: It is so classy and so delicious. I cannot resist a cheese plate. Whenever there is one there, I have to go and sneak a piece of Brie off of it. I don’t think I could do without cheese.
Marni: So, here’s the thing about cheese, though. I love it. It’s so delicious. It’s starting to not make me feel well, so then I think about the mold factor, right? The way cheese is made. Is that kind of gross?
Lily: I don’t think about it. I don’t think about it at all.
Marni: It’s so hard to resist such a delicacy.
Lily: Uh-huh.
Marni: I just have to do without it, though, from now on.
Lily: Let’s look and see if we can find some that you can eat.
Marni: OK. That’s good. We’ll do a little elimination diet, or just a little sampling here and there and see what works.
Lily: Perfect.

Marni’s not feeling well, and Lily asks why. It turns out that Marni thinks she might be lactose intolerant. She just ate a big plate of cheese, and she thinks the dairy might be what’s making her feel ill.
Lily loves cheese a lot. Whenever she sees cheese at a party, she has to eat some. Marni loves cheese, too, but she doesn’t want to feel sick. She thinks she should stop eating cheese to solve the problem.
Marni asks Lily if she ever thinks about the way cheese is made. It’s a mold, so it’s kind of gross. Lily doesn’t think about it at all. She suggests that she and Marni look for some cheese Marni can eat. With such a large variety of cheese, she’s sure they’ll find something.
What’s your favorite type of cheese? Do you know anyone who is lactose intolerant?
