It has been a long day for Kat. She worked until late, and then she came home. It’s so late that she doesn’t want to stay up any longer. It’s time for her to end her day and hit the hay.
In the past, many beds were made from hay, or strong grass. So, when a person went to bed, they literally hit the hay. Today, many people have comfortable mattresses, but we still use this expression. When do you usually hit the hay? Do you like to stay awake late?
