Tanis: You know that movie It’s A Wonderful Life?
Chad: Yeah.
Tanis: Um, there’s uh, modern day version of it out now called The Family Man. I don’t know if you’ve seen it or heard of it or anything?
Chad: I have. Yeah, the one with Nicolas Cage, Tea Leoni?
Tanis: Yeah, yeah, that one.
Chad: Yeah, it’s, I thought, it was a really great movie in that it, you know, showed this, this man who had it all in the business world…
Tanis: Uh huh.
Chad: Who, what, how could life be different if he would have chosen his, his college sweetheart and I often having, you know, having had kids of my own pretty quickly early on in life, wondered how would it have been different if I would have waited.
Tanis: Do you think about stuff like that? I mean ‘cause me watching that movie, I’m single and
I didn’t go down that path right away… but I don’t even think about it, you know, so I maybe kind of now, being in both worlds, do you think back on other choices you could have made?Chad: Yeah. The the movie caused me to be pretty introspective about my, you know, post college decisions uh, to get married right off the bat and I don’t regret any, any part of it at all, any of my decisions, but you know I think a career is pretty hard to get started while your having kids early on and I see that Nicolas Cage’s character, he was able to rise through the corporate ladder quicker that he could have with kids maybe.
Tanis: Well, I think it’s, it’s totally true or you know it’s funny just watching this corporate guy trying to, you know, learn the the value of like having a wife who loves him and kids. I, I liked that part of the movie, but, um, I though the end was kind of cheesy, I mean, you have to admit it.
Chad: It maybe stunk of some cheese. I think it was pretty on the money as far as how a guy might feel when comparing the two ways to go about life.
Tanis: No, I definitely agree there but, it was just a bit out of the realm of believability for me.
Chad: Yeah, well, I just really enjoyed the, uh, the part where he was the auto sales guy!
Tanis: Oh, I loved that!
Chad: I mean just seeing him in that role was pretty funny!
Tanis: Right, especially when he’s trying to, you know, used to being such a big weeler dealer. I liked it when he had to go drive a mini van after he’d been driving a Ferarri around. I thought that was pretty funny.

Tanis mentioned that The Family Man is a remake of the movie It’s a Wonderful Life. That movie is one of my favorite Christmas movies, but what I really like about this film is that it shows you the life of this man, George Bailey, played by Jimmy Steward. At one point of the movie, George is very unhappy with his life and wants to jump off a bridge, but an angel gives him the opportunity to see what the world would be like without him. The difference between It’s a Wonderful Life and The Family Man is that Nicolas Cage’s character is given the opportunity to see what his life would be like if he had made a different choice and had been married.
I think it’s important that we realize the huge differences we can make in other people’s lives every day. We make decisions that affect the rest of our lives and the lives of others. It’s pretty powerful and amazing to realize how much control we have over what happens everyday.
Which movie did you like better, It’s a Wonderful Life or The Family Man? How did you feel after watching them? What kind of emotions and feeling did you have? Please share this with us at the “Movie Madness” message board.
Take care until next week,
Nedra
